One thing to remember when entering contests or any sort of competition. This was drilled in to me when I was doing horse shows. Every time you enter, you're paying for one person's opinion. That's all.

And you know it depends on the judges.........
I can never figure out judges logic or reasoning.
I don't do contests.
Yes, judging in general is very personal. I judge visual arts for a pageantry circuit locally so am in tune with how *we* do it, and those individuals involved with adjudication. We are experts in our field, and I would expect no less from a contest ran by a reputable organization in our visual medium. Criteria is key, and any contest on the up-and-up would have such for the judges to use
as a base for their commentary. But, realistically, judges are human and subject to their experience when looking at *anything* much less ranking something esoteric like photos. I like to think most, if not all, adjudicators have a sense of responsibility toward their task and are serious about their judgment(s)...and I think that's all you can ask for. But an advantage would be to know what the criteria is any given event, neh? In our marching band shows tailoring our shows to the judges criteria (AKA "writing to the sheets") is bottom line...if you don't it becomes even more of a dice shoot.
They do look good, however I too would go with the first.

Thank you very much AzPicLady. That makes sense.

Thank you very much sippy. I did check with the woman in charge of the event and she said up to 5 entries in each category were acceptable. Looks like 1 and 2 will be entered.

Very subjective.
The background in the second one is distracting - too busy and it looks like a road is visible.
The first one has a much more natural setting.
Good luck!

Thanks very much Jeff for your comments. I will be entering both and hopefully maybe one will win.

I never enter photo contests. I just don't take the time to do that. I did enter one years ago in the 90's and won 3rd place with my entry. A few days ago I noticed in the Idaho Falls Magazine there is a photo contest going on that is going to end entries submitted in a few days. I mentioned it to my photography mentor and he suggested I enter these two buffalo photos.
What do you think? I really like them and think they have a chance in the Wildlife section. Both photos were taken at Yellowstone National Park.

I always love the 3/4 angle on any animal photo (like #1) but that's my artist eye talking, not a photographer's eye. The water adds interest to #2. It would depend on whether the judge leans toward artistic or interesting. Sadly, we never know that until it's over. Anyway, it would be #1 for me.

Thanks Jo. I found out today I can submit up to 5 submissions per category so both buffalo pictures will be entered.

I have to ask myself: WOULD SOMEONE after seeing my photo say βOh WOW!β If they donβt, then its not worth entering, even if it does win. Contests with winners that are not βOh WOW!β are just vacation photo contests, IMO.
