How about your phone. If it's dated, upgrade and kill two birds with one stone. Modern smartphone cameras are excellent.

Agreed. Good advice.

We might be at a point as photographers where we should be considering phones as our primary camera. Then our other cameras each have a special purpose.

Greetings.

Today I attended an event (ok, it was the Acro-Cats, a traveling show of trained cats. Please don’t laugh.) Photography was encouraged but “professional “ cameras were not allowed, by which they meant cameras with interchangeable lenses.

I’m planning for the next such event. Since bridge are mostly gone now, what camera would you recommend? Preferably cheap. Possibly used. Probably with a relatively long focal length.

Thanks!!!!!

What nut would go see trained cats? Wait! Wife and I went to a cat video thing at a movie theater in downtown LA. It was part of a cat convention nearby. It was a hoot. Now I’m going to find a trained cat thing!

From a friend who owns both: Large - Sony 10 IV, Small - Sony 100 VII. Check out the ratings on these two and you will see there isn't really a challenger. Both are pricy 10 IV around 1600, 100 VII around 1200.

Lumix ZS100 cuz you say "preferably cheap". Pretty much a cheap version of the Sony. One inch format, 20MP, full conrols, raw+jpg, EVF.

Good choice there if bucks are a factor. A friend was looking for a small camera and I loaned her my Lumix ZS100 to compare with the Sony 100 VII. The performance was very close but the Sony was a bit sharper. She went with the Sony but then again, the Lumix is 400-500 while the Sony is 1200. If you don't plan to print above 8x10, it would be hard to tell the difference.

Let me put a word in for my bridge camera, a Canon SX50 HS.

If sensor size isn’t an issue for you and you don’t plan on making 20x30 prints, consider the Sony HX-99. It’s relatively affordable and zooms to a 35mm eq. of 720mm. It’s small and fits in a shirt pocket or small belt pouch. A Panasonic equivalent is the Lumix ZS-70 or 80. It has pretty much the same parameters as the Sony and costs about the same. I have the Sony RX100 VII, which I love, but it is expensive. None of these should ruffle the cat show’s feathers.

Consider the Leica Q3.

I love it, but it’s not cheap, and pretty much out of stock. It also requires fast memory cards, and a fast computer with lots of storage.
It does take beautiful photos.

I have the Q2 and keep talking to myself about upgrading to the Q3.

I bought a Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS80 to take to those events that don't allow 'professional' cameras. I generally have to run the photos through Topaz DeNoise AI to clean up the noise, but I have only used it at concerts, at extended ISO. It takes great video, too.

Between my wife and I, we are on the same page. She has one and I have the other. They are "best ever" after having "serious" cameras since the early '70s.

We share the joy of the RX100 VII. How does Sony get all that greatness into such a small package?

Lumix ZS 60 or ZS70 ( compact, big zoom range, adjustable features ); always bring it on excursions, photo or otherwise, as a backup

I love my Nikon Coolpix A900. I never leave home without it. My Nikons D800 and D850 and all their lenses are gathering dust except when I am going out for some serious landscape images. Iy's hard to see the differences.
