You have no chance of winning if you don't enter the contest! As far as judges go it is a crapshoot.

I never enter photo contests. I just don't take the time to do that. I did enter one years ago in the 90's and won 3rd place with my entry. A few days ago I noticed in the Idaho Falls Magazine there is a photo contest going on that is going to end entries submitted in a few days. I mentioned it to my photography mentor and he suggested I enter these two buffalo photos.

What do you think? I really like them and think they have a chance in the Wildlife section. Both photos were taken at Yellowstone National Park.

i think that the first one is the better picture because of the detail in the bison's face.

I actually like the second photo better because the reddish/tan fur overlapping the darker fur on the buffalo is mimicked by the reddish-tan bark/lichen over the darker bark on the trees. Also there is water and you can see most of the buffalo's legs, rather than them being "cut off" in the first shot. As others have said, these are very nice photos and deserve to be entered in a contest. There's my two cents...I don't expect change... (smiley)

Did someone say I wasn't going to enter? I am not sure where that came from. But you are correct at any rate on both counts.

I like them both, but I'd submit the first one. It looks like the bison is more three dimensional.

I have figured out some of the judgers who show up at our club competitions and don't submit when I know they will be judging. Don't know anything about yours, but I like the second (profile) one.

They are both outstanding photos and worthy to be entered.

I don't normally do this, but you asked...
Overall, I like #1. If you zoom in closer, you see that # 2 is a little soft in the focus, especially the eyes. So # 1 is the best in my opinion. However, the colors seem to me to be over saturated, especially in the trees behind the animal. There is also a fair bit of color noise in the fur on the hind quarters. If the judges are looking for technically proficient images, I think you would lose points. If it were my image, I would desaturate it a little bit, especially in the yellows. I would remove as much color noise in the fur as possible. Or I would convert it to black and white and let the power of the image shine.

But what do I know? That's the reason I don't do contests. LOL

Both are really good but I like number one the best. I think it would be your best selection.

I think both are good. The first is more unique.

Thank you very much Max for your comment. I have only entered one photo contest in my life and it was sending in prints. I have never met a photo judge in my life so have no experience along those lines. But I do realize people often judge on their own criteria and not all judges are equal in their knowledge of the subject matter of photography. I appreciate your comment on the second photo.
