We crossed the Piazza Domo and visited the magnificent Palazzo Arezzo di Trifiletti.
Palazzo Arezzo di Trifiletti is one of the most beautiful historical residences in Ragusa Ibla. From its balconies you can enjoy a unique view of the Cathedral of San Giorgio. The palace still preserves its original 19th century furnishings and is still inhabited by the descendants of the Arezzo family.
History and architecture of the Palazzo Arezzo di Trifiletti
The history of Palazzo Arezzo di Trifiletti is very old; in fact, it is one of the many buildings that were destroyed by the earthquake of 1693 and then rebuilt. In 1850 Carmelo Arezzo bought the building and it became the official home of the family. The palace is still inhabited by descendants and the tour, which is only possible by appointment, is guided by Domenico Arezzo himself. Through the front door you enter a courtyard where a pincer staircase leads to the upper floor. It is made of pitchstone and the banisters are in neoclassical style. The family coat of arms, represented by four hedgehogs, can be seen in the arch in front of the staircase. On the sides of the courtyard are the entrances to the stables and storerooms.
The interior of Palazzo Arezzo di Trifiletti is made up of several rooms that still have their original furnishings. The visit begins in the “Hall of Portraits”, where all the ancestors of the Arezzo family who lived in the palace are represented. The visit continues in the most prestigious room, the Hall of Feasts. It has a splendid late 18th century floor made of Neapolitan majolica tiles, all hand-painted. The ceiling is decorated with original 19th century frescoes that have never needed restoration. Then there are several rooms, each named after a particular feature. There is the “Room of the Angels”, for the splendid ceiling decorations made in the early 20th century, and the “Yellow Room”, which still preserves the original pitchstone floor covered with precious ceramic tiles. In the Red Room you can admire the family chapel.
