My Nikon D7100 has suffered a chipped door to the memory card compartment. Pricing a repair by Nikon it is comparable to purchasing a similar used body from KEH or MPB plus shipping to Nikon. I am tempted to step up to a D7200 for ~$100 more, largely for an improvement in ISO performance and wireless capability.

For a bit more I am also considering a Zfc. I know this would require also purchasing the FTZ adapter. Lookopng on line I am left wondering what functionality I would lose with this upgrade. I have several Nikon lenses:

18-135mm
18-200mm
70-300mm
35mm f1.8
50mm f1.8

Currently my workhorse lens is the Tamrom 18-400mm and I also have a Tamron 10-24. How would these function with the Zfc?

Thanks for your input.

Bill

I upgraded from D7000 to a D7200. It was a huge improvement. I'm not sure about the improvement over the D7100. I mostly use my D850 now but I sure like my D7200 for macro.

All of your lenses would operate on the Zfc since it is a dx body. Any full frame lenses would work also. Yes you would need the ftz, but you already know that. As to functionality derived from the body I'm not sure you would lose much at all. In exchange you would be setting yourself up much better for the future. There is a risk the Tamron's would have compatibility issues. Others may know more about that.

Thank you, I am looking at the Zfc over the Z50 since it has front and rear control wheels something I would clearly miss. And, yes, you hit my biggest concern of Tamron and Sigma compatability.

I used a friend's Zfc and found it awkward to hold as it doesn't have a hand grip.
If you you shoot in manual mode duel control wheels are a must.

Years ago I ago I had a D7200. I could with a Nikkor 18-200 and hardly ever had to change a lens. Great combination. The 7200 also has 2 card slots. Go for it.

I believe it was someone on this forum that commented he was getting a Tamron 150-600 G2 because the original 150-600 would not work with a Z camera. You might want to check make sure before you buy.

A chipped door doesn't sound really serious unless it doesn't latch. Is it user replaceable? If you plan to replace the camera, it's worth a try to remove the door. What's the worst that could happen?

My old D200 battery compartment door was removable. Never tried (nor chipped) any other doors on my other cameras. You could get replacement doors from third party vendors. If the memory door doesnt' show up in the third party vendors lists, it's probably not (easily) replaceable.

And a non-Nikon repair facility might be able to replace the door at a lower cost.

Of course, GAS demands that the camera get replaced with a newer model.

PS: Have you tried duct tape? (Gaffer's tape is better -- the adhesive does not remain on the body when the tape is removed {although exposure to high temperatures could change that}. And Gaffer's tape comes in black, so it matches the body color better than most duct tape).

I would not look back. I'd get the Zfc if I were in your position. Yes it costs more. All your Nikon lenses will work with the FTZ adapter. Most third party lenses should work:

I found my Zfc was difficult to handle with larger lenses and it may require changes to your post processing programs. I'd recommend that if at all possible, handle one in a store.

That is an important point. Mirrorless full frame and APS-C/DX cameras do not solve the problem of big, heavy lenses.

To have a balance between camera size, weight, and heft, and lens size, weight, and heft, nothing beats Micro 4/3 bodies from OM Systems and Panasonic Lumix. Micro 4/3 cameras share a lens mount, so there are over 100 lenses from OM Systems (formerly Olympus), Panasonic Lumix, Panasonic Leica, Tamron, Meike, Voigtländer, Laowa, and others. They range from 1/2 to 1/4 the size, bulk, and weight of APS-C and full frame lenses of equivalent purpose.

There are trade-offs to smaller format sensors, but from my perspective, they can be worth it unless you cover extreme sports and wildlife.

Z fc + FTZ have both Tamrons work great with this combo
Highly recommend ZFc not only looks great easier to use thank to dials
Only complaint no build in flash only one customizable button, conoared to Z50 which I bought first
So far all my Dx lenses work great

The problem with the old 150-600 was the firmware could only be updated by sending it in and the didn’t do a firmware update for it. Those other Tamron lenses will either work as is or can be updated using the Tap-in console. As for the Nikon lenses it depends. The DX lenses are fine. The primes are if they are AF-S lenses, which they probably are unless you bought old lenses when you got the D7000.

I went from a D7000 to a D7200 and it was a nice upgrade, but it’s 2024 and I would take advantage of all the advances that mirrorless brings.
