Although I'm pretty capable on a computer, the dash board on my 2018 RAV4 LE pretty much defeats me. They tried to get me to upgrade from their basic model, but why pay for MORE stuff that you don't understand was my reasoning. Anyway, it does have a CD drive that I've made many CDs for and that's great, however, I noticed that way under the radio, close to the console, there is a USB port and I was wondering if I put music on a thumb drive and plugged it into the USB port would the radio recognize it and play the music? Thanks...

So put one song on a thumb drive and try it?

I have a 2022 Highlander with the same issue.
So . . . I have a 256 gb thumb drive I loaded w/ 1700 tunes. However . . . in loading them on the drive, they ended up being sorted alphabetically by the number they were on the CD - all the 1’s, then all the 2’s . . . all the 21’s . . .
In addition, I’m not sure if there is a read capacity limitation in that it will tell, for instance, that it’s playing #274 of 500.
Haven’t got that far into the catalog yet - wife’s car so I don’t get to drive it that much.

I rented a RAV4 a number of years ago. I used a cable to plug my iPhone into the USB port in the car and was able to play my music directly from the iPhone through the radio. To me, much better than either CDs or thumb drives.

If you put them in folders, by artist/album on your PC/Mac, then copy them to the flash drive, your issues will be solved. I have 50,000+ music files, many being entire albums, on my PC.

My husband has recorded hundreds of hours from our favorite classical radio station, Classic FM, which he has put on thumb drives in both our car and truck. He deletes the advertisements and news breaks but keeps comments from the hosts. It's all we listen to when travelling.

Both my Honda and a little Phillips micro stereo in my kitchen read MP3's off a thumb drive. Interestingly, I found out I had to re-format the thumb drive to a FAT32 in order for the car to read it.

Can't speak for your car but my car recognizes mp3's on a usb thumb drive. Your car audio must have software that recognizes thumb drives and mp3's. For my car, which is brand new, requires the thumb drive be formatted with DOS Fat32 and be 32GB or less.

I first tried it with a drive that I had formatted with NTFS and it didn't work. I reformatted it with FAT32 and it works fine.

I found the format and size info in my car's operating manual.

I formatted the Thumb Drive to fat32 and copied and pasted the music files I wanted from Windows Media from my Playlists to the thumbdrive. I then tested it on my computer to see if the songs were there, and they played just fine. Then I put the thumbdrive into the usb port in the car and USB came up on the media screen. I touched that and then it came up with another screen that listed Artists, Albums, Songs, Genre, etc. However, it gave me the message that no songs were on the drive. The USB drive in my car is white which I found out is 1.0 and the Thumbdrive is black which is 2.0. I don't know if that is the problem or not? Most of the music on Windows Media was download through 4K Youtube to mp3 program and it automatically sends the music to Windows Media. I've made CDs with these same songs that I'm trying to play through the usb and they've worked well on the CDs. I don't understand where I'm messing up here?

Just a guess. Try putting the files in Win Explorer in a folder/folders, then copy them to the thumb drive. See if they will play on the PC. Then, try it in the car. I've been playing mp3 files in my cars since 2009. I never had to format the flash drive - right out of the box and plays perfectly. The only issue I had was with a 64 GB flash drive. I researched and found the largest size compatible was 32 GB. Sorry you are having difficulty. If I can help, please let me know.

That B/W difference should not be an issue. The USB standard specifies that the transfer will be at the slower speed. It should still work.

Are you sure the music is in mp3... PC will play other format files but cars usually will not
Are you giving it some time in the car? My experience is that older cars and some brands of cars take MUCH longer to read the contents of the USB. Had a 2011 Chevy that may take 1/2 hour to read it... I would just insert USB when I started down the road and it would pop up later

Usually USB thumb drives come in FAT32 may be why you haven't had to format. I have only had to format to FAT32 when I have previously formatted the drive in NTFS.

I have 2 brands of cars... 1 will only play FAT32 but the other, which is also 4 years newer, will also play NTFS.

I use 64GB drives, maybe 40GB full now, and the newer car also reads an updated drive very much faster.

I guess it depends on the car radio. My car radio plays both MP3 and *.wav files.

I bet you can plug your phone into the port and stream music from Pandora or Spotify or Amazon. I could in my 2013 GMC pickup.
