I used to work with a teacher who was a 6th Dan Black Belt in Jujitsu. He said that if he had any kind of weapon, even a broom stick he would take on a guy with a knife, but without any weapon unless it was impossible or he had to protect others he would do his best to get/stay away from the guy until the cops showed up.

Getting sliced up is probable unless the knife guy was a total loser and showing off by taking him on was not worth it if you had a choice. Let the guys with the guns and badges take care of it.

There were people physically harmed that could have been protected. The last guy to turn from the guy with the knife had an opportunity when the guy rushed past and then had his back to him. I realize not everyone is capable of helping and their first priority is themselves and loved ones. I have yet to go thru a mall that has nothing that could be used as a weapon in the center hall.
