I’ve never had an issue with Nikon batteries, even those I’ve had for several years. Had one incident where my D750 would fail to fire after pushing shutter button. It turned out to be an off-brand battery that would not run the camera after reaching about 60% full.

If it breaks try getting it repaired. Nikon won't touch it and independent repair can't get parts.
You post implies you bought a Grey market camera but link is for a battery
Didn't know batteries were classified as Grey market.
How much did you save, please tell us. It will make a nice down payment on your next camera.
Guess your new to UHH
I dunno why you think it implies he bought a camera. It seemed pretty clear he was talking about the battery. You wouldn’t use “OEM” in describing the camera.
Thank you everyone for your input. For the D500 user. I had a Nikon 5300 that was not giving me great quality. Also found out I could not calibrate it to the Sigma 600 lens. I had to send the lens back for repairs. Thankfully I bought the five-year warranty.
I would purchase a Nikon battery.

When he said Grey market he threw me off. I misinterpreted his post. My apologies
I stay with Nikon Batteries unless they are no longer available. That said, I usually get the battery holder for AA batteries, because I can always use AA batteries if the Nikon batteries are no longer available.
First, great camera....excellent choice. Batteries, so much has been written with folks on both sides...Buy name brand only, "I've used Brand X for years never an issue."
I've tried a few off brands and then took a "deep dive". Charging voltages: Any off brand that sells a battery where the battery can be charged with a different voltage ...I steer clear of. (Take a look at Nikons Tech Specs on the charging unit). Battery itself...I believe the latest Rev for the D-500 battery is Rev C & it clearly states the MaH, so if you're buying off brand make sure they match. Also look at battery temperature spewcs during use.
To me it really came down to this.....I can afford to spend $$$XXXX.XX for a well built camera, am I really worried about a few $XX to save?....

Lets say someone buys a Mint D500 from Ebay, costing an average of $850.00 for one with a low shutter count.
A Nikon battery for that camera will cost $60.00 from Ebay.
So a Nikon battery will cost you 7% of the cost of a D500 camera in Mint condition with a low shutter count.
I consider that a great investment in your D500 purchase, and a bargain.
OEM Third party batteries most of the time work BUT I am a OEM guy

I have used after market batteries for years in a D7000, a D7200, a D810, a D850 and never had one fail or swell in my camera. That is an urban myth. Save yourself a lot of money

Go to Amazon, type in “batteries D500.” You will probably get the option to buy 2 batteries and a charger

It happened to me, battery swelling.
I was practicing for the 2017 eclipse and was taking 10 exposures every 5 minutes, computer controlled with images plus, my way of bracketing. I knew at some point I would need a battery change. The camera was mounted on a AVX, tracking mount, polar aligned, so the camera couldn't be moved so I had to change the battery blind. I open door and my after market battery wouldn't come out. I had to remove the camera and with much difficulty removed the swollen battery.
Urban myth NO, and BTW, I live in the suburbs, lol. If that happened during the eclipse it would have really messed up my eclipse session.
Over the years I've been burned buying what I thought were high-capacity, but inexpensive batteries for my Sony mirrorless cameras (Sony's eat batteries alive). I still have a couple of the Sony OEM NP-FW50 batteries, but they're getting old. I recently bought a couple of equivalent Duracell batteries and they've been working fine. Now these are not high-capacity, virtually the same as the Sony OEM batteries, but they were reasonably priced ($56 for a pair). At the moment I've got five batteries (four in my field bag, one in the camera) for my mainline camera, and two in my macro camera kit (both the mainline Sony a6500 and the dedicated macro camera, a Sony a6000, use the same batteries).

My experience in looking for batteries for an older Nikon camera was that the choice of brand name (or what you trust from experience) is limited. It sounds like you plan to use the D500 for a while. Get a new Nikon battery, and I would suggest a couple of secondary brand "good deals". Push the use of the cheaper batteries, baby the Nikons.
I have multiple cameras that use the same (group of) batteries, and in total twice the number of batteries as cameras. I have worn out two Wasaki batteries, but I have never had a specialized battery leak in or damage a camera. Be sure to have the proper charger for each different battery (Wasaki had its own charger).

I always try to use Nikon OEM when available. Always have great results.
