Never have I charge ANY battery in camera. In fact never knew you could

Most cameras you can't but some you can. I asked only because I noticed that the Li-Ion batteries tend to swell when being charged not so much when being used.

I just purchased a Nikon D500 camera from KEH camera that looks like new. A friend recommended this camera and KEH. I want to get a back up battery. Any recommendations for off brand batteries, other than Nikon or should I stay with the Nikon battery?? Thank you.

I bought OEM Nikon Gray Market, it has been fine.

If it breaks try getting it repaired. Nikon won't touch it and independent repair can't get parts.
You post implies you bought a Grey market camera but link is for a battery
Didn't know batteries were classified as Grey market.
How much did you save, please tell us. It will make a nice down payment on your next camera.
Guess your new to UHH

He talked about gray market batteries. He saved about half or about $25 for each battery. Nikon asked you not to send the battery with the camera for repair so there is no problem to get the camera repaired.

Thanks to all the responses. I think I will stay with the Nikon batteries.

Good call. The path of least regret.

I always buy The Nikon Brand batteries. I tried a generic brand and found they don't last as long on charge. By the way You will love your New D500, I got mine 3 years ago it's built like a tank. And menus have so many options. Plus as opposed to mirror less you can't beat a live view finder. May I suggest something For you to think about. I have the MB-D17 battery grip on my 500. Besides have the extra battery, the Grip adds balance and stability, especially with long lenses. And you have the grip for vertical shots. Just a suggestion you might appreciate. Good luck.

The issue is battery quality more than brand name. There ARE aftermarket batteries that provide very good service, there are some that don't. The way Chinese manufacturing works is that they will make any quality level you pay for, in the Same factory.
If you want a premium product , they can make that, If you want to build down to a cheaper price, they will do that as well. Name brand Batteries buy you quality control. Some third party batteries work well.
If you get a new camera (to you) and need one or two extra batteries the cost of brand name is not too onerous.
If you have several cameras that are used extensively and need many batteries, the better third party options can save you money.
I have done both, and in my experience, I do get longer life from OEM batteries
Battery chargers with two slots & simultaneous charging ARE helpful if you are a heavy shooter.

He didn't say gray market. He said he bought OEM gray market. He meant the battery and not the camera.
Although his link to the battery listing on Ebay I am not sure if it's gray market. It could be counterfeit as there were some very good counterfeit batteries that even fooled B&H and B&H actually sold them without knowing.

We’ve had good experiences with Wasabi batteries and chargers.

Check out Kastar.com I've bought many batteries for various cameras and never had a problem. They also sell on Amazon.

Nikon. Nikon batteries have internal chips in them that go along with the camera match. People are not informed of this. I asked very pointed questions of the Nikon factory rep and he told me this is why some of the off brand batteries fail to work properly in Nikon bodies. His words "The manufacturers have not mastered the use of chips in their batteries."

Always check to make sure the Nikon batteries have the holographic label on them. There are fakes out there.

Yesterday when I was checking my batteries I popped a Watson Battery in my D500 and it read no battery. Tried it in the D7100 and it was fine. Another Watson was fine in the D500. Maybe it's just a coincidence, if you believe in them, but I think I will stick to the Nikon batteries since I've got 6 of them. I will feel comfortable with one camera and three charged batteries and a charger on any trip or outing.

I’ve used both Nikon and other brands. The other brands worked but not as long per charge (same experience with an OM-D camera and OEM vs other brand batteries) and 1 went dead after a few uses. This seems like a “you get what you pay for” situation. But no data on $/shot or charges per battery comparison.

I have a D500 too, and I use both kinds of batteries, Nikon batteries last longer, but much more expensive. Just stay away from the brand Newer, very low quality !
