The problem is going to be finding alternate batteries in the future.
The D500 is 8 years old, my T1i is 14 years old.
The older cameras all work just fine, but people keep "upgrading", which over time reduces the customer base for the older camera batteries. Luckily some batteries are still in demand, while others are falling by the wayside.
At some point, those with older, perfectly working cameras, will be forced to get a current model camera because good, well made batteries are (will be) no longer available. I don't think I would buy from Bingo Batteries....
Glad my Sony H-1 takes AAs, it's only 18 years old.

Isn't technology attrition great?
The problem is going to be finding alternate batte... (show quote)

That is true obsolescence. Something that in perfect condition and yet can not be used. Yeah I bought Watson battery for my Nikon D1x because I can't get Nikon battery for it any more. The Watson battery works very bad.

I recently bought a pair of batteries from a company called SmallRig thru Amazon. I use them in my Nikon D850. These batteries have the chip in them that enables them to work in my camera which normally won't accept 3rd party batteries. They came with a USB charger and are a few miii amps higher than the Nikon batteries. If I remember right they were. about $35. So in the 6 months I have had them , no problems.

I just purchased a Nikon D500 camera from KEH camera that looks like new. A friend recommended this camera and KEH. I want to get a back up battery. Any recommendations for off brand batteries, other than Nikon or should I stay with the Nikon battery?? Thank you.

Tried off brand - stay with OEM for peace of mind

Well I get the camera for $0. Now I can't even find third party battery for it. I would never buy that camera any way. Didn't buy any lens for it. In fact I bought no lenses for my digital camera.

I have only an 18-200 and a 50 for my DSLR.
So if my next camera cannot use those lenses, my losses are minimal.

I use lenses I bought for my film cameras. Some were bought back in the 70's. Some were early 2000's. But they all were bought for film cameras. They work the same for digital as for film. No crop factor. Oh yeah some were bought for my enlarger I use them too.

My five AE-1 and Ftb lenses couldn't mount on the T1i.....

Ride with the brand. Your camera will be safer, the battery will last longer, and you will be much happier with Nikon branded batteries.

As long as it remains available...
The Canon LP-E5 is no longer available, only by a third party, and only one I would trust.

The OP said he had a Nikon D500, not a Canon LP-E5, I was responding to the OP, and yes, the battery is still available for the OP's D500, as I stated in my response to the OP.

Which camera does this LP-E5 goes into? Actually batteries is what I worry about. You can't stock up batteries because even if you don't use them they still go bad in time. Memory cards you can stock up. I hate to have a camera in perfect working condition yet no battery.

My response was in regard to YOUR statement.
Or must we ONLY converse about the NIKON situation???????
Give me a break..... Geeze.

I have never had a problem with an off-brand battery.
