IF, there are NO images currently on the card, the camera will recognize this and will not format cause there is no reason to.

Where ever did you come up with that ? Its such an "new" idea that I had to check it.

I just formatted a card three times in quick succession in a D750. It doesnt tell me its unnecessary. It just does it, every time.

Youre usually reliable. Do YOU have some particular camera that behaves as youve described ?

I have never met a computer that refuses to format a blank drive because it's blank. It does warn that I would lose data I have on the drive though.

That is incorrect information.

try this, take one picture, leave it on the card and then tell it to format the card.

Full format erases everything on the card. I think I read the camera does a quick format. What that is, it only removes the information that points to the pictures on the card. If that info is gone the camera thinks the card is empty. Give it a try, shouldnt really make any difference but who knows.

Why do that ? Cameras dont care whether tge card is empty or not.

I know this doesn't answer your query but I never remove cards from any of my cameras. I've heard a few stories of others having issues by removing them.
I always use the USB cable that came with the camera, much quicker and no risks.
Cheers,
Ron.

Bingo. Me too for years and have not had a single issue with my d500.

I used to do that on a work PC. Having an extra drive with the programs I used but didn't want the boss to know. I quick format the drive before I go home then unformat it when I come back the next day.
