I hope you have reservations. It's a very popular ride. The comments on staying away from the engine use to be a fair warning, because of the coal cinders. Now, all the engines are oil-fired. They were having too many fires along the tracks from the cinders. I've been on the Durango-Silverton ride twice. Awesome ride. Can be quite cold at times. Would really like to take the Cumbres and Toltec ride. It's a longer ride with a barbecue at the mid-point on a ranch.

We’ve been on both train rides that Fredpnm mention and would recommend either or both. Appropriate clothing for the locale and sufficient batteries, and memory cards for digital, or plenty of film if you’re still shooting that way, or both if you’re shooting both!! Can’t think of anything else that would really be needed.

Thinking about going for a ride on a narrow gauge train in Durango, Colorado in late May. Wondering if anyone here has "been there done that" ? Any do's or don'ts advice would be much appreciated!

It’s a fun activity. Beautiful scenery. You are in the neighborhood of Mesa Verde NP which is a great experience too.
