I use mostly GIMP and darktable. I never liked the way Lightroom wants to organize your files for you. I guess I have my own way of doing things and I'm not about to change now. At 70 and partially disabled, I'm not going to last in this hobby a whole lot longer anyway.
Not trying to change your workflow if it works for you, but I have heard the complaint that LR wants to organize your files for you several times. I don't believe it. I organize my files, THEN I import to LR. Just trying to set the record straight. (LR wants you to keep your organization of your files constant so it knows where they are. It's generally good practice to not reorganize things often because if you pick a good organizing system, you can find things on your own consistently).
And we all hope you last in this hobby as long as it gives you some enjoyment.

My editors are constantly updated with new versions. Not possible if not connected, plus any work I want to post or send digitally would be a big hassle without being online.
Sending/posting is a different process from editing. Maybe he doesn't.
Sounds like you're assuming everyone works the way you do.
My editors don't get updated, I don't send on-line when I'm done editing.
I can work for hours without the net "active" on my system.

The watermark would be added to the digital image before it's printed. Why is that hard to understand?
I understand that but it makes no sense to watermark a print you’re selling. Apparently what he wants is a signature in his prints. Completely different than a watermark.

Care to make other guesses based on your additional thoughts?
Logically? Seems to have been your deduction.
Apparently he did mean a signature. My answer was based on what he said.

Interesting perception....
I use my signature as a watermark.
What says a signature is NOT a watermark?
You?

You can use whatever you want for a watermark. The difference is the intent. Usually a signature is gonna be opaque and in an unobtrusive location, like how an artists signs their work. A watermark is usually translucent and more blatantly placed and often repeated. Their intended purposes are completely different.

And a "watermark"
ORIGINALLY used to be embedded in the <writing> paper.......
Things change.
I would expect ANY symbol not originally part of the image as a watermark.
It could even be another picture.
I would never assume that a watermark is any particular "symbol". Like you
now said, it can be anything, including a signature. And you're qualifying:
usually transparent... , but not
always. The intended purpose is to mark with an identifying "mark", of one's choice.
Whether it's obtrusive or not is up to the person marking it, not the perception of the viewer.
There is good form and bad form.
I didn't really mean to start an argument about what is and what isn't a watermark! What I really want is to sign my prints for sale in a very unobtrusive way. The watermarks that I have seen are generally translucent and can almost be overlooked and that's how I want to sign the prints, so that's why I called it a watermark. As for my still running my photo editing on a Windows 7 based computer, I do indeed know that Microsoft no longer supports it. However, my current setup does everything I need it to do and upgrades cost money that I really no longer have to spend on my hobby since I was forced into retirement due to my partial disabilities. Windows 7 not being supported any longer is a primary reason this computer has been taken off the internet for quite some time now. I also had many problems with upgrades and virus infections with all the versions of Windows that I have used. I now do all my internet work on a Chromebook, which is basically Android and I have had virtually no such problems. Anyway, I really don't need the latest and greatest to be effective as the recent sales of my prints have proved to me. I get lots of compliments on my work, but there is no greater compliment than someone plunking down cash money to take one of my prints home! Geese, if I can do that shooting with an obsolete Pentax K3 and editing with free software on a Window 7 based computer, then I'm a happy camper. Good luck and good shooting to all.

Light Room Classic calls it a watermark.

Gosh, it's been so long since I made my watermark, I have forgotten how I did it. Did do it in Photoshop, then curve, and tapered the letters, I and then pick a color from the image to semi match/blend in with the photo. Makes it very unintrusive. Turned it into a 'paint brush', so it is easy to use repeatedly, and blends into the photo very well!

You do know that the watermarks can be removed in PS
And added at a lower opacity to make appear translucent or ghostly! Surprised LR & others don't include this as a click on feature!!!
I watermark all mine with an app called Pixlr. Been using it for 3 years or more. I drag the photos to my Samsung tablet, then open the app. It is all done in the tablet, then you can make it the font and lightness or dark, big or small, ect.
