H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide) does it quite well. It was prescribed to my wife and I by our audiologist.
He said to place a few drops in one ear, one at a time, for about 10 minutes. You will hear it bubbling. Dry the ear and do the other one. It works for us.
You can also use carbamide peroxide, which is what they sell specifically for ear wax removal. It seems to work a little better, but hydrogen peroxide is much cheaper and works. You might need to do it a few times to get it completely clear. Put a few drops in your ear and a cotton ball to keep it from leaking and lay on your opposite side for 10-15 minutes. Then drain it and gently flush with an ear bulb. No need for any gadgets.
