I need to unexpectedly video a speech tomorrow night. I am primarily a still shooter and did not realize that even at the lowest file video settings possible on my camera, my system cannot handle files that large. My system handles large photo files in Lightroom with no issue. Getting a new computer and software isn't an option on this short notice. Am I stuck using a cell phone to record the speech, or is there something I am overlooking that would make it possible to realistically use my camera for this? I appreciate any help.

Put in the largest memory cards it will work with, set it to record the cards one after the other and have spares to swap out if the first set is filled and have spare batteries to swap out also.
Or run to your local camera store that rents gear and rent a Camcorder, get cards etc. also.
Use your R6 shutter speed 60 and a fast lens (f2.8); a 128 GB fast card (1600 -2000) and you'll get 21/2 hrs + recording time. Shoot 4K a 24fps and the edit to fit.. i.e. Facebook 720. YouTube 1000
Your advantage of the R6 over a video camcorder is you can use adjust ISO for the lighting or lack thereof.
Simple and it works.

The processing/editing part is my problem with these huge files. I have large capacity cards--just no way to process or edit. Is there a solution I am overlooking?

Recording the video is not a problem. I have the large capacity cards. I just don't have a way to process/edit the videos. Suggestions?

Those are client side applications, and the OP said "my system cannot handle files that large." That is why I recommended a server side application.

Minimize the pixel resolution. Its a speach so image detail is of no concern. The audio is all that viewers would really care about. Smaller files are less load on the cameras processors. Avoid the awkward embarrassment of your camera shutting down due to overheating.
Avoiding 4K and just shooting MP4 files will further minimize file sizes. No matter how efficient your editor is, the smallest possible files will always be the fastest to work with.

Yes, no need to shoot 4K. FHD will be fine. And what kind of editing are planning. If your system will run Davinci Resolve the free version will do everything you need.
