Definitely a fine subject!

Possibly a farm house, but I doubt that.

I'm used to wide doors on barns at ground level, but this has what looks like a hayloft towards the top, and that makes me think barn.

Certain livestock you would want to keep in a warm environment, hence the fireplace/chimney.

Thanks for joining the conversation. I appreciate it.

Looks like a rancher's workshop

I can see that. Good suggestion.

That is an interesting building. Thank you for taking and submitting photos of it.

Dennis

It sure is that, Dennis. When I'm back in that area this Fall, I will make a concerted effort to solve the mystery.

Based on my early years, I would guess this was a "tobacco strippin shed". The tobacco leaves were often stripped from the stalks in cool or cold weather and needed some heat from a "wood stove".

Nice barn shot, Tom. It just occurred to me that in many of your pictures of these dilapidated barns the grounds around them are neatly mowed. It’s kinda odd that the effort to maintain the grounds isn’t reflected in the maintenance of the barn.

Stan

Hi, Stan.

I compliment you for that keen observation. I, too, am baffled by that situation. And you are right...I see it all the time. I've thought it might be a help in rodent control, but that's a wild stab in the dark.

I sure wouldn't spend any time it.

That's interesting, Harvey. I have the impression that the stripping and drying part of a tobacco operation required massive buildings. But I know next to nothing about that business.

Thanks for your input..

Tom, you are correct ... the drying of the tobacco is done in the large barns by hanging the plants on stakes and then hanging them in the "tobacco barn" Really like your photographs.
