The Red-Headed Woodpecker

These pictures are from the archives, taken in 2010.

The Red-headed woodpecker population is declining, and it is rare to see one in this area. I probably won’t see another in my lifetime.

Imagine my surprise when I went outside to get in my car to go to work and spotted this really cool bird. I didn’t know what it was. I dropped my stuff and ran inside to get my camera. A Red-bellied woodpecker (a regular here) was chasing this bird up and down the trees. It was a challenge to get some clear shots.

I was very late for work that day.

Such good shots. I have only seen one redheaded woodie at my feeders some years ago. but used to see them regularly on the golf course I played on.
