I always use my Sigma 150-600mm lens for birding but mostly use it to get better shots close up rather than trying to shoot birds a long way off.
This little guy was at least 70 meters away so I had a go, hand held at 900mm (D500, 35mm equivalent) cropped as well.
While it's not the best shot, I like it with the dark, natural, background.

Thanks Chief...yes, I love my D500, a brilliant camera in all respects...everything I shoot is hand held, birds are too quick to bother with a tripod and macro is to much on the spur of the moment to even get a chance to set one up...I've got a great Manfrotto tripod and an automatic Manfrotto mono pod, they are both gathering dust in the corner of my office...

Yep, I love mine also. I also have a D850 which I love, but the D500 is more comfortable in my hands and I love the sound of the shutter! A nice, quiet click-click. The 850 shutter sounds like kicking a big can down the road!
Everything I shoot is handheld too. But I don't go to 900mm!!

With my 1.4 teleconverter on I get out to 1275mm...still get some decent shots...this one was taken with my D7200...
