There has been so much imagination used in the photographs so far this week. I have not had much experience with photographing rust, so my entries are somewhat limited. Here are a few. The first is an old rusted out truck seen in a field near a golf course in Colorado. The next two are photos of a local railroad crossing bridge ( I believe no longer in actual use). The last few can be seen in Bisbee, AZ. It is an old mining town and there are some examples of the old equipment in various places in town.

What's the safe word

Beautiful shots 💰💰💰💰, but suddenly I had the image of a field full of S&M farm-type implements - unused for ages - and couldn't help laughing

YUP that's exactly what the "Antique EMporium" AKA junk/salvage yard near us looks like.

Note that there some types of steel are formulated to be installed unfinished, and then allowed to rust. Now unlike most other common steels and iron, the rusting process halts after a period of time and the underlying metal is protected from further deterioration. This is engineered to work similar to the natural oxidation process seen with materials like aluminum and copper. One of the advantages of this is that over the life of the structure, there is very little maintenance required, like painting, which generally requires that the old paint, and any rust, has be removed first. Now this material is significantly more expensive and is generally only used for smaller structures, or where long-term maintenance would be difficult or expensive to perform. It's also used when there's a desire for a certain aesthetic appearance, which might have been the case with this bridge.

It's clear that many members enjoy photographing rust. Most likely because there is such an abundance of it making it an easy subject to find.

You are likely right plus, for me anyway, there is often a certain set of memories associated with the rusty items.
