Where do you find inspiration for your photography?

I constantly struggle to come up with what to shoot. Does it come randomly to you? Or do you plan and brainstorm and imagine the final picture first and then arrange to make it happen?

As I’m driving or walking around, I’m constantly looking around and asking myself how I could frame things for a photograph. I consider what sorts of interesting perspectives I could use to make what may otherwise be a boring subject more interesting. I’m always taking pictures in my minds eye, even when I don’t have a camera.

Im amazed at the ability some have in respect to composure.
Especially where the gear used was limited.
Feel that viewing, examining everyone's photos does improve my potential.

What caused you to buy a camera? What caused you to buy your lens or lenses? What are your interests? Do you view the Photo Gallery here at UHH or other photography sites for ideas and inspiration?
Some people might like certain seasons more than others, say flowers and insects that kind of need to wait for warmer weather. Others might like people over animals. But really, you must know yourself enough at this stage of life to know what / where your interests reside.

What caused me to buy my first “real” camera, with interchangeable lenses (Canon T-70), was being stationed at a very remote location overseas. I felt that getting into photography, and trying to actually learn the craft, would be a great way to make the 2 years on a mountain top go by faster.

I mentor the Lyonia Preserve Photography Club. When hiking the 360 acre preserve most looking for scrub jays I find myself seeing an interesting twig on the ground or the way light illuminates flowers and leaves. Then I freeze that moment in time.

My wife and I enjoy taking Amtrak to many of the very beautiful places the USA has to offer and shoot a pot load of images. After we get home we sort and process the best ones and then have books printed or make videos with Adobe Premiere and add suitable music. That way we can revisit our vacations with out leaving the house.

I shoot…Because the scene Or event is “part of my life” and I want to remember the moments. Photographs of your life (around you), can be memories (later on), that trigger your mind back to “that great day” when you snapped the button on your little black box!

Animals can’t freeze time! Cameras are to a photographer, as paint brushes are to a painter…..(and with digital enhancements, the cameraman can make things look more brilliant and vibrant, with a little imagination and skills!
Painters have a tough time stopping action of a track-runner. The fast lenses can stop the (action) at 1/5000 of a second!
I love it!

I had forgotten about (the 1st) interchangeable lenses.
Those “screw on types), are dinosaurs, now.
The advent of bayonet lens, was awesome techno for cameras.

I will photograph only what begs me to do it.
Subjects cannot ask gently. They need to beg loudly, sometimes even persistently.
A "subject" is not necessarily some thing, or person, or scene before me at any particular moment. Maybe its some visual concepts that having been catching my eye, and so after a while they will constitute an idea that simply refuses to go away ... IOW, its that persistent begging to be addressed.
I often use my phone as a sort of sketch pad to play with ideas over time, as seen below:
