I agree.
First, I would go into my online Medicare Account and check for anything out of the norm.

I'm not guessing, I got a new card after a data breach and have been using the new number for several months with no problem.

In today's mail, I had a letter from the government... Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The letter began with: "You now have a new Medicare Number and your previous Medicare Number is no longer valid. Your new Medicare card is inside." It further informs me that the new card/number is effective April 2 and that I should inform my providers of the change.

I have no idea why they would replace my Medicare card and assign me a new/different number.

Has this happened to any of you UHHers?

My guess is that part of the new number is a flag to doctors and hospitals that... this old guy has cost us enough money... treat him accordingly... been nice communicating with you UHHers.
In today's mail, I had a letter from the governmen... (show quote)

Several years ago they changed mine and my wife's.

The same happened to me a few months ago. It is legitimate. For your safety I would call Medicare to verify.

To several who provided feedback:

It was not to take the SSAN off the card. That happened a long time ago.

I wasn’t aware, or forgot, about the data breach. Looks like others got new cards/numbers for that reason… will confirm with Medicare… and look online at my claims.

I will contact Medicare to confirm reason.

Thanks to all for your replies!

I've read of people being scammed into Medicare Advantage through various deceits. Advantage isn't Medicare; it's private insurance. Make sure you're still on Medicare?

I am inclined to believe that recent hacks and new issues in types of services may have a great deal to do with these changes.
Most clinical services will have completed their billing cycles. Take your old cards and shred them. They cannot be used any longer. Now your new cards are the your preferred way to contact your providers. Write down your providers, they will contact you if there is a billing issue.

This is the sign of the times. As a pharmacist, I am often correcting billing information. While it is an arduous process i do it so that prescriptions can be processed.

But first contact Medicare to make sure they are real. There have been cases of phony cards being sent so the old cards can be used by hackers longer before being caught. And of course trying to use the phony cards creates major problems also.

I haven't received any new cards and I have regular appointments with no problems. Of course about 1/4 of my appointments lately have been with VA - different system with their own cards.

UPDATE: I logged on to my Medicare account and ask "why" the new card/number. Their response was: "Medicare had confirmed fraud on your account. Therefore, Medicare made the change to prevent fraud from happening."

Thanks again for all who responded.

Have you logged into your Medicare account lately? You might want to check and see if your account was one that got hit with a bogus catheter scam recently. Medicare has paid out over $2 Billion, yes that is a B in false catheter's being billed to Medicare patients accounts. No one ordered or received these catheters but Medicare just went ahead and paid the companies without verifying if they were valid charges. Supposedly the FBI is investigating but I'd bet that Medicare won't recover hardly any of the charges. This follows an earlier scam where patients were receiving unordered Covid 19 test in the mail. At one this we received 36 tests in a little over a 3-4 week period. I'm now on my 3rd Medicare card update with the latest going into effect April 2nd.

My wife and I both received new cards with different numbers 4 days ago. Which the letter said were valid after April 2nd also.

Neither I nor my wife have heard of this. However, I did find this on Medicare's website. Not exactly what you received, but be wary:

"3. Medicare Card Replacements
In these Medicare scam calls, someone claiming to be from Medicare, the Social Security Administration or your state’s insurance department insists you need to get a new Medicare card or replace a paper card with a plastic chip card. This Medicare card scam dates back to 2018 and 2019 when Medicare sent beneficiaries new cards with randomly generated ID numbers meant to better protect against identity theft.

Other twists on this scam exist as well. AARP reports Medicare impostors might ask for your new, randomly generated ID number to confirm that you received your card or to “activate” it. A scammer may also tell you your new card won’t work because it isn’t the correct one, offering to send you a replacement card if you give them your personal information."
