You said it. What a tool and not the surgical kind.

Ulster County, NY would like to remove the medical requirement for the county Health Commissioner to be a doctor…..
I am inclined to believe that a health commissioner should be a physician. As a pharmacist in NYS I would not have a great deal of faith in anything they say or do. That would be comparable to bringing your farm animal such as a cow (in labor) to the nearby mechanic. I could just imagine them saying, “I’m not a gynecologist, but I’ll have a look!”
This decision is probably motivated because the County cannot afford to pay a physician’s salary. It’s sad!
I recall a mild pharmacologist who was the first commissioner of health at the Food and Drug Administration. Long story short, she didn’t like the medical data placed before her. When she questioned it, there was a great deal of scuttlebutt. She continued and prevailed. Dr. Frances Kelsey prevented a major tragedy and set everyone straight about ……..Thalidomide!
Many doctors that I know would not mind to be the Health Commissioner. Perhaps, the State could establish a stewardship for newly graduated doctors.
A doctor would be much better than having a bean counter in charge......
I was a state-certified health inspector in Connecticut and we had a state Commissioner who oversaw our enforcement of the Connecticut Public Health Codes. The Codes covered food sanitation, insect and rodent infestation, public beaches, dairy operations, septic systems, day care centers, restaurants and more. These all affect public health but require far more comprehensive knowledge than just for medical issues so it makes sense to have someone who isn’t necessarily an MD but rather someone with broader expertise.

Just following the rest of the political decisions in this country - all made by folks with no medical background at all - just their own prejudices and agendas. They are trying that with our local health department and we’re fighting it - as we tell the county commissioners, we elected you and we can remove you - you’re job is to accomplish what the people want - not what “you” want.
Seems to me that in reality it should read not “what people want” (because most people do not know what they need from a health perspective), but what they need. I don’t know if that requires a doctor, but it should at the least require someone educated in the field of public health.
seems like she/he should be a doctor, but not necessarily a physician.

I’m not sure what you mean. But those students getting ready to graduate from medical school could be county health commissioners
Sounds like a "legitimate" requirement for giving our health commissioners a paycheck.
Like wise, it has always seemed odd that we have been employing our U.S. President and (call) him
the Commander In Chief, when he (or she) has never been in the military, to be given instructions
on how to "handle combat" or enemies on the battle fields of the world.
To make matters worse, our [Commander in Chief] will often sit down with the Joint Chiefs of Staff,
to discuss military matters that are being employed on the battle fields. When the CIC decides to
veto or "phoo-phoo" the recommendations of military actions to be taken, it becomes obvious that
just being an American citizen, 35 years old, (or older), and never have been convicted of a felonious
act, might not, cut it!!
Somewhere after Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Bush, and Carter, we have lost the experience of men
sitting in the White House, (making) decisions that only an experienced military trained, person might u
understand. (integrity is important, but a little experience in life and death situations, wouldn't hurt, either)

You do mean "physician", right. I mean, a PhD professor of Russian literature ain't going to help in a medical crisis, are they?
Sorry, pet peeve number 43.
