Hi A. T.! I appreciated reading your comments! I'm 75 and have been taking photographs since sometime between 7-9 years old. They let little kids put in the glass flashbulbs and remove them after the flash. Times are different now. In 2020, I purchased my first digital camera. I had to for earlier I was traveling in Italy. A fellow traveler had a digital camera. She was reviewing photos and going back to some place to retake. I, however, had 20+ rolls of film not to forget to bring home to be processed...Purchased the Canon 5D and stayed with them until I had to sell the 5DM4 because it was too heavy to handhold and I am not crazy about tripods.

I wish I was more like you, who immerse yourself into one huge field and learn all that you can every day. I am not like that - I love photography. I also love riding my horse, quilting, crafts, reading, and traveling! Oh, and I am learning guitar. I excel at being a dilettante!

My husband and I took community photography classes at Rochester Institute of Technology (where I live). It is very highly regarded school. They taught us the concept that photography is "painting with light", and they used some of the Ansel Adams works to give us examples. I think that was the most important concept I ever learned about photography. We also worked in the darkroom, added color to b/w prints, learned about so many different aspects. Unfortunately, they don't offer the classes anymore.

You have me smiling here at midnight for I have heard for my entire 75 year life to slow down. I tell people here, who meet me, that this is slow! I do enjoy every moment of everything I do, while I am doing it.

Thank you for the "God Bless You". He and I been having some interesting conversations lately.

God Bless you,
Linda S.

Linda,

You're a breath of fresh air and an inspiration to me and I'm certain to everyone you come in contact with. I am like you also. I'm an avid kayak fisherman, have achieved 300 and two 800 series bowling awards and I have been studying natural health remedies for some twelve years. I say these things not to brag at all but to share with you some of the things other than photography that occupy my time and my life. So my dear friend, you continue to enjoy this wonderful life that God has Blessed you with and NEVER forget to hug, kiss and tell your hubby how much you love him.

God Bless you,
A. T.

Are you doing market research for some firm?

Your topics:

Are you aiming for mastery in a specific genre or type or exploring various styles and situations?

Camera straps: standard or added features?

Fast or slow shutter speed, how do you decide?

Photo editing: do you prefer to keep it subtle or embrace bold transformations?

Black and white photography -- do you use one of the primary colors to convert or just all colors?

Photographing people: natural or posed?

Prime or zoom lenses -- does it even matter these days?

Filters or no filters? How do you feel about post-processing tools shaping your final image?

Lighting: natural or artificial? What's your preferred source/method and why?

How do you approach composition in your photography?

Research ?!? ROTFLMFAO. Hes just parroting earlier topics that were proven for producing long heated "discussions" ... except for that bizarre inclusion of "camera straps". Perhaps hes actually shopping for one, and needs the approval of the Hawgster Majority (like there could ever be such an event).

As a hobbyist I shoot a wide variety of subject types/styles etc. I aim for mastery in all of them, but realise I probably can't claim to get close to it for any.
Variety is the spice of life :)

Amen to that! (From someone whose entire career was in marketing and market research!)

Aiming high is what its all about. Perfection is just a myth anywho.

I can look back at "stepping stones", each of which loomed as perfection until I reached them one by one and went on past them.

Marilyn and I photograph a variety of subjects but enjoy photographing birds. We catalog them as we go. Nature photography is high on our list but since we live in the Southwest there are many landscape opportunities.
