Yes, Like I said the Nikkor 105 is a great old lens but so is the 60mm micro. Less reach but it will stop down to f32.

I had the 60, but I found the working distance was too close. At the closest focus the subject was inside the lens hood, so I had to keep taking it off. So I got the Nikkor 105, which doesn't have that problem, and it stops down to f40. The 105 us much larger and heavier though.

Hey Hoggers i'm looking for advice on a macro for mainly flowers and dog portraits. After lots of research I have pretty much narrowed it down to the Nikon 105mm vr and Tamron 90mm vc. My body is a Nikon D7200. Any one have experience on both or one or the other? My gut says the Nikon but I keep reading about how good the Tamron is. I did find a "like new " Tamron for about the same price as an "excellent" Nikon at MPB.Thanks for any input.

Either should be fine, I use Canon but I also have lenses of other brands.
The 105 will work better for portraits because you can stay further back. And certain macro subjects need some extra room - like spiders, the spider may not care, but I like my hands holding the camera to be further from the spider.

Macros make excellent portrait lenses for people also when in the 75 to 150/200mm range, you can stand back and get all the details. If the details get too much (skin flaws etc.) you can soften etc. in the processing, but if the details aren't there in the first place...you either have to be an expert at post processingm AI etc. or you are just SOL.

I've been using the 105 Nikkors - VR & not - for many years. For examples with flowers and such, see

I should let this die but...Other choices are: Reversing ring, they are about $5. and you will have a macro without having to purchase another lens, Bellows, and with adaptors you can get unbelievable captures, Extension tubes, another $5 purchase from China and it will do the same thing as an expensive lens, Teleconverter, yes, remove the lens inside carefully and put it in front of your reversed lens, and my favorite, Drum Roll Please: reverse the final element on a 18 to 55mm zoom lens from concave to convex (or the other way around) and you will get something beautifully unbelievable. Sounds a little wonky but if you want to be different than most give it a try. hear back about Comments please. Cheers.

I have a Nilon 105 f/2.8 and a Tokina 100f, f/2.8d. I use them both on a Nikon D850. The Tokina is much more affordable and lighter than the Nikon, but the Nikon has a better build quality and supports auto focus bracketing. Got the Nikon on the used market off of eBay from Japan, but you can't go wrong with either

What glass do you own currently? Another alternative are extension tubes. You might not use the macro enough to warranta big investment. I use tubes when I need to.

Nikon 70-200 f/4, Sigma 17-50. Thanks for the sugestion. I will check them out.I picked up 2 like new lenses really cheap to sell so the investment is nil. I plan to use the macro for flowers, plants, dog and people portraits.I am have been doing research on the Nikon 105 vr and Tamron 90 vc. So at this point it is probably one or the other.

It is hard to beat the Nikon 105. Great for flowers. Dogs are trickier because of depth of field issues. I would go with a shorter lens for those guys.

I use Extension Tubes for "Macro" along with bellows and reversing rings. I find that mose "Newbes" to macro photography never learned the "in and outs" of using what they have to accomplish this task. It's a shame that schools have done away with their darkrooms and classes on photography and are teaching what they think young children should know about their pickles and lack there of. I hope I didn't get too political here enough to be "non-published" in my comments. Anyway, I'll publish some photos as soon as the latest 24" of new snow melts and normalcy returns.

I use the N105 on Sony with an adapter. Good lens but for macro anything you have all the time you need to make it work.

A good light tent or flash setup is more important than lens. Editing skills most important of all.

I do focus stacking. Which may outside your interests. But it sure is fun.

Thanks for the rep;y Don. What do you mainly shoot with the 105?

Mostly flowers Royce. Sometimes even a portrait or two.
