Mantis Nymph

This is my preserved mantis nymph that was gifted to me in August last year and I wanted to see how it was holding up which allowed me to stage it for a focused stacking session.

This session was staged using a 5X microscope objective as the optic for the camera and mounted on a bellow to the required distance of extension for the finite style objective.

He seems to be holding up very well, your preservation techniques must be spot on.

Thanks, Brenda. I keep the fuzzy specimens and moths in the freezer. The specimens I preserve wet, like this mantis, are kept in denatured alcohol (Ethanol). I've tried isopropyl; however, it bleaches out the colors and they get soft and can fall apart. I found white vinegar to work well as an alternative (hey, it works for pickles!). One of the better choices I've tried was "Everclear" 190-proof grain alcohol liquor (drink responsibly). It's more expensive than denatured alcohol which I buy a gallon of. The grain alcohol evaporates when placed in containers that are not sealed air-tight (I use plastic pill bottles to store my specimens in).

Thanks for the explanation of your technique, white vinegar seems to have multiple uses.
