The other day I put a muffin on a small plate to melt the chocolate chunks, and when I turned on the microwave there was all kind of fireworks. It was a little scary. I took out the muffin & plate and I saw a tiny metal wire on the plate. I realized it was what was left of the twist tie from the bag of muffins. I put the plate on the counter and went to get another muffin, and the plate exploded. It was a small Correlle plate and it shattered. Glad I had stepped away.

I have some Corelle for every day use and I dropped one and it shattered. I always thought they called them "unbreakable".

Neighbor is off on a run and may be gone for a few days. I cleaned the little silver piece and tried it again. Sounds like it might be the fan. Starts to sound like chicken frying (and popping) when you start it.

NO...no dirt. We were in the food business for 26 years and even though I am not a GREAT housekeeper, the kitchen has to be clean. I mean everything you touch in the kitchen has to be like new.
Yes, I do cover food in the mikey so it won't spatter, but now and then a spatter sneaks out.

The rest of the house can slouch a little. LOL

I can't believe that unless you are extremely unlucky that cleaning or splatters are the problem, if so, I'd be going thru microwaves faster than my retirement checks arrive. You either have an electrical problem or unluckily defective products.
At work a fellow scientist had one after another computer rapidly die. The maker was so sure it was an electrical issue they brought in a unit they were sure of and plugged it in, result, it worked fine!!! So, bad luck or defective products do happen.

Corelle is hard to break, but when it breaks it really breaks! Our kitchen has a ceramic tile floor. I knocked a plate off the counter once and it shattered into a million pieces! It was under the stove, under the fridge, and went under the pantry door. And the entire floor was covered with little pieces. I was just stunned, I've never saw anything like it!

I know what you mean. When I dropped a plate, it shattered into very tiny pieces all over the kitchen. It's true when they say it doesn't BREAK. Right...it shatters!

I routinely put my coffee pot with a metal band in the microwave to reheat the coffee with no problem - been doing this for about 40 years - as long as the metal doesn’t touch the metal sides, no problem.

You are a lot braver than I'll ever be! Besides, if I did that, people would call me... oh, never mind.

just a word of caution, the panel with the X looks like the Magnetron, ie the thing that produces the microwaves.
The magnetron holds a VERY high voltage even when unplugged and should only be looked at by a qualified person.
Please stay safe

I've seen videos about removing that and doing other things with it, but attempting that has killed people.

Corelle from years ago is decorated with lead paint.

It reflects the microwaves around the inside of the oven.

I wonder if a microwave with a mirrored interior would work better.

No need. The metal around would reflect the microwave the same.

The magnetron doesn't hold voltage. The capacitor does. I used to service 6000W microwave powered UV lamp.
