My trust Sony RX100iii goes everywhere with me. Even when I have a backpack full of other gear, it rides in my front pocket just in case I see something interesting. It is my main travel documentation camera. My ancient Samsung phone simply doesn't cut it as a camera. It makes calls, sends texts, and holds a large amout of music files. That's its lot in life.

I really like my Sony RX 100 III. I use it a lot.

No "bad" cameras mentioned that I'm aware of. There are some differences between them. Some have a (small) viewfinder, important to some people. Others don't. Some have long zooms. Some have more modest zooms. Some cost nearly twice as much as others.

Splitting hairs? No. I think what has happened is that phones have become so capable, that each "pocket camera" is measured for what it can do against a phone.

One camera is weather/water proof. You can use it when you can't comfortably use your phone.

One camera has a very long telephoto reach that a phone can't.

Another has a bigger sensor so should be better in low light or for enlargements.

If a "pocket camera" can't do something better than a phone, it stops selling and is discontinued.

If a pocket camera doesn't sell, it's discontinued. It doesn't matter what it can do. So far there seems to be enough interest in the relatively expensive models by enthusiasts to keep them going. For how long?

I'm very afraid we're going to lose them all. Every so often I have a panic attack and nearly decide to buy a new one immediately and just put it away for safe keeping. The phone alternatives are not there yet and I'm not at all convinced they'll ever get there. In some ways the flagship phones are moving backwards -- Apple's new ProRAW file format is a big step backward. We have to remember who the phones are designed for: not photographers.

I use a Sony RX 100 va as my backup camera when I leave my much more heavy Canon R5 or R7 in my hotel room and just go for a walk. The 24-70 range is perfect for street photography I find it perform to its maximum below 400 ISO but pp can remove any noise should a higher ISO be required.

I've been shooting my pocket-sized Canon Powershot G9Xii more than any other of my film & digital cameras. At 20MP capturing in RAW, with IBIS, it does a wonderful job, better than my phone. Both Canon and Sony offer these cameras, sized roughly the same as a deck of cards.

I have a Sony RX100 vIII and it works well for me but would like to try a Canon. Do you find the lack of a viewfinder on the Canon G9Xii an issue? I do like the size of the Canon.

I find occasionally, the lack of a movable rear screen of the G9Xii to be limiting, but not the lack of a viewfinder. Given the images are digital, I just need to take a few images, check the results, and shoot more if needed, until it seems I got it right. It's a different camera, and I just adjust my approach to use it.

While I'm not necessarily promoting the use of cell phones over an actual camera, you have to admit that if pocketability is really an issue, they can't be ignored. For example, my Apple iPhone 11 Pro, has three lens, in addition to the 'normal' lens, it has a wide-angle and a 2X telephoto (my wife's Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max also has three lens, a normal lens, a wide-angle and a 3X telephoto). And cell phones also geo-tag images, so there's no question where you were when you took the picture. In fact, that's one of the things that I do, when I'm out there using my normal camera(s), none of which geo-tag images, if I feel that I need an accurate location of where I'm shooting, I'll grab my iPhone and take a shot, which gets archived with the rest of the images, but it'll have the location embedded in its metadata, which can be referenced when needed. And my iPhone shoots videos (including slow motions and time lapse) as well as panoramic images.

And as an added 'feature', since most smart phones have note pads and voice recorders, you can immediately document your shoot, again, either as your only camera in a particular situation or when supplementing a shoot using your mainline camera(s).

Anyway, just my thoughts.

I have, among others, a Nikon S9100 and a Nikon S9300. This one was taken with the S9100. I would say it works far more than "well".

This photograph is an 11X14" on the wall. I did not go to the size limit of my printer (13X19") due to lack of available wall space.

I have 2 pocket Cameras... Canon SX-150, which i got in 2012 & was Stolen from me in November 2021 because of a idiot Security Guard & its Replacement is a Lumix DC Model, which was better & has 20 Megapixels, i got a week after on Amazon.

the Lumix has an fold out rear screen which is good if your taking Selfies, Features that are too long to mention, but for $300 Bills, i got me a good pocket Camera, & for Nearly 2 & half years its done good.

the SX-150 i like because of the Creative Filter features, sadly when my Camera was stolen along with my Backpack & other gadgets, i had nearly 7000 images on a 16GB card, as well as another Card with close to a 1000 images, also with flash drives that i was to Transfer the images to, i don't do Cloud!

Last Year after Easter, i found another Canon SX-150 Powershot on Ebay, paid only $39.00, with tax & shipping & got the Camera in 3 Days, works like a Charm, but the SX150 to me is Cult Camera & done good for me.
