There are two types of Bison: Plains and Wood Bison. If you ever drive up the Alcan highway in winter, the wood bison graze along the road! The Wood Bison is the larger of the two.
It is quite an experience to get 'caught' in a bison traffic jam in Yellowstone. You 'could' reach out of your car window, and touch one (in theory, if you wanted to have your car door uninstalled)!
There are no Wood Bison in the lower 48 and 100 or so in Alaska. The Canadians have the remaining several thousand. There are roughly 450,000 Plains Bison left in the lower 48 of which approx 4,000 as of 2023 reside in Yellowstone Park (Had a big hunt last year in neighboring Paradise Valley. Shameful the way it was conducted to say the least.)
