No offense to your cousin but a 45 ACP would be considered small to the bears of Alaska. That round generally is not known for penetration unless a specific bullet is loaded to give more penetration. But even still it is not considered a good caliber to STOP a bear coming toward you. If the bear has no idea you are there and it is closer than 25 yards a shot to the ear would work well. Otherwise many other calibers would be a better choice.

Many years ago, I met a bear expert while horse camping in bear country in Wyoming. He was about 6’5”/250 pounds, carrying a .44 mag. Me: 5’7”/170. He suggested I carry a .357 Mag. Funny story: he told me about a guy he knew of that got chased by a grizzly once. The man ran down in a ditch, up the other side into a wall of brambles. Trapped. The bear ran down into the ditch; kept jumping up trying to get out of the ditch. Every time his head appeared, the man shot his .22 at the bear. After 9 rounds the bear didn’t pop up again. Forest service people came out and checked the bear. Told the guy the only reason the bear was killed was because one of the bullets had gone through an eye socket at just the right angle to pierce the brain. Who knew??

Do those who carry pistols when they are out “shooting,” have you ever saw the need to use them in any way or discharge them?

Yes. Twice! The fact that I made it be known that I was armed, and PROVED it was enough!

Until someone steals your bag. In Florida, you could carry your .45 on your hip. Much more practical. But, I must remind myself, I am NOT justified in killing a thief, a fleeing thief is not considered a threat to your/my life. Thus I leave mine under my pillow.

I'm not a full time Florida resident, but yes, much more practical when I'm there. And I carry to protect my and my wife's life! But leaving whatever you use for self defense under your pillow will only keep you alive (maybe) less than 1/3 of any 24 hours! If you are comfortable with that, good on ya!

I carry a Walther PDP 9mm. It is a shame what the world has turned into, and the fact that people have to be prepared to protect yourself no matter where you are going or what ever you are doing.

Roger that!!

I was backpacking in Northern California with my wife. I didn’t realize that where I was camping was accessible by motorcyclists from the other side of the mountain. They were getting way too close for comfort, and I was getting a bad vibe. I took my pistol out of my bag and strapped it on my waist. They left the area.

Being prepared is often the difference between life and death! And the police can't be everywhere all the time!

Although I do own a S&W .38, I have never in my 75 years felt the need to carry it. Perhaps I’m naive.

I have a friend, that shortly after he got his carry permit made the statement that he only carried when he felt he might need it. I asked him HOW he figured out whether he might need it when leaving his house. He just stared at me and couldn’t come up with an answer.

Okay, you got me. What was the quarter for?

Perhaps to gauge the size of an object being photographed?

Totally agree. Many years ago, was approached by several dope heads in a wilderness area in Wyoming. Let it be known visually I & the guy with me were armed. End of confrontation. The sheriff agreed with our actions.

I carry a Model 1911 .45 ACP! Don't know if that would be considered unusual??

Probably.

Yep. I wouldn't own a firearm without knowing all of that. It's a huge responsibility.

Yep! But it's a huger responsibility to be personally responsible for being able to defend your and your family's life and safety, no matter what. There are between one and two million (MILLION!) cases of armed citizens doing exactly that every year in the United States!

Perhaps so. Why do you own it if you don't carry it? I Just turned 70 two days ago. And feel even more certain that I should carry. I'm a pretty big guy (six feet 225 pounds) and retired military with self defense experience. But I know, that at 70 years old, I'm not as physically capable as I once was.
Every day, many times per day, assaults happen. Especially on senior citizens. It gets worse every day! And the Cops can't be everywhere.

I own it because ever since I joind a competative rifle squad in high school I have enjoyed shooting at local ranges. Why don't I carry? Because most of the places I go to don't allow firearms. (Church, restaurants, etc.) If I'm at a downtown restaurant, I would be most likly to need the gun going from car to restaurant and back, but since I can't take the gun into the restaurant or bar I can't carry it anyway. Concealed carry is legal in Ohio, but impractical in many cases. Also, the S&W 38 revolver is a bit large for concealed carry.

When I worked for the Red Cross I was often in housing projects that had armed guards in the parking lots. I thought about carrying then, but I don't think the RC would allow it.

But your points are well taken. Perhaps I'll reconsider.
