Wenlock Priory is in the village of Much Wenlock, Shropshire,England.

Wenlock Priory has been a religious site for over 1300 years and was original an Anglo-Saxon Benedictine monastery founded in 680 by King Merewalh. Merewalh was a minor King in a sub-kingdom of Mercia.


Merewalh daughter Mildburh became the abbess of Wenlock Priory.She died in 715 . Mildburh was later canonised and became Saint Mildburh (alternatively Milburga or Milburgh). She was known for performing miracles and having mysterious power over birds.When she asked them the birds would leave crops alone. Her feast day is 23 February.


After Mildburh death, Wenlock was refounded by the Cluniac order in 1079 and 1082 but little is known about Priory until the Norman Conquest.


In 1080 Roger de Montgomery founded the Cluniac priory.


In the early 13th century the monks started work to rebuild the church on a grand scale.When in was finished the church was 350ft (106m) long,one of the longest in England.


On the 26th January 1540 the Priory was dissolved by Henry V111.The buildings were sold in 1545 and the prior's lodge and infirmary were converted into a private house.

Here in the US; our history starts with the first McDonalds located on Wilshire Blvd in L.A. in 1950 :(

Are the ruins of the priory part of the National Trust, or is do they still sit on private land?
