The only thing worse in a show or concert than someone using their phone in front of me (held high) is some $06 doing the same with a damn iPad mini.

You're right about that. Lots of people hold up a phone, an iPad, or a camera and block the view of those behind. It's even worse when they stand up to take a picture.

What is a "$06"?

If you really want to take pictures, get in contact with the band. You might be able to work a deal. ...... And your best option is less popular bands at smaller venues. I contact them ..... and frequently get a pass to photograph.

Less popular bands and smaller venues is photographically the way to go.

Theres nothing *photographically* more rewarding about a top selling band in a big arena ... quite the opposite.

If you just need to document your own presence at some major event, use your phone and be done with it.

OTOH, if your goal is the making of photos that will express something about music in performance, there is NOTHING about the inclusion of famous faces that can enhance that expression. But very good access, and lack of restrictions, WILL enhance results.

Attached is just phone snaps but notice the perspective indicating very short distances.
Seldom if ever bring a "real camera" into a tight scene cuz its just so deadly uncool.

Dear jlocke,

I guess I was lucky when I used to see Bob Dylan at Gerdes Folk City,NYC, when he was just starting out because he was sitting at the bar getting up to leave & we asked why he was leaving & he said he had no money left, so we bought him a few drinks that night. Next night he was preforming & we went to see him, great show. No cameras, no illicit recordings etc just people enjoying his music in those days. We saw him many times at Gerdes.
Please enjoy the show !

I HAVE seen signs @ some local venues [Birchmere etc.] Specifically 🚫 prohibiting "Professional Cameras with Interchangeable Lenses"

Yes, that’s pretty common. I’ve actually taken cameras to the Birchmere but only when I personally know the band and they’re playing the bandstand rather than the music hall. There I can move around rather than being stuck in a seat. Same at the Hamilton. Then there are places like Wolftrap where it depends on the artist. The problem there is not everybody is in the same page. I went to a show there with my RX10MIV, (to circumvent any nonsense about interchangeable lenses), told it was allowed at the gate and they let me bring it in, but when trying to take photos from my seat was threatened with expulsion if I continued, (while all around me people were getting video with their phones).

Today, concert audiences in the USA behave far more calmly than they did fifty years ago. Back then, I always took my camera to concerts, and no one said a thing to me about it. There was rampant dope smoking all over the arena, the odd stand-up sex act happening down front in "the pit," people passing people overhead, dozens of rolls of toilet paper sailing through the air, and that was on Clemson University campus.

At a Leon Russell outdoor VFW Stadium concert in Uptown Charlotte, the police acted like it was normal that kids were smoking pot. Some in the audience brought in their own coolers of beer. At least one guy was wandering through the crowd selling what he claimed was LSD. The hippie lady next to us bought some and freaked out... I have a slide of her somewhere, chain-smoking what was probably her third joint. People were creating their own very temporary mini-Woodstock environments. It was surreal and somewhat sad. I just burned a couple rolls of High Speed Ektachrome, pushed one stop, and enjoyed the music.

Several years back when I was still shooting film I was in the pit at a festival and Shirley Manson, the sexy singer of Garbage, was going commando under her miniskirt. I got some prime beaver shots. Unfortunately during the next act somebody bumped me while I was changing settings and my camera back opened. It was a sad day.

Here's a few photos from the last show we attended; Gov't Mule at ACL Live at the Moody Theatre. The main floor was General Admission, so we had seats in the 2nd row of the balcony. For future shows, I think the mezzanine/balcony is the place to be. The main floor is flat, but the mezzanine and balcony seats have a good slope, so easier to see if/when someone tall is sitting in front of you.

These were shot with my 'concert camera'; a Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS80. The camera takes 4K video, too. Here's a link to my Dropbox with a video from the Peter Frampton show last November...

Thanks for the Frampton video. One of my favorites.

Why do they prohibit cameras in enclosed venues? Smartphones are good enough if you’re near the stage but if you’re far out there you need a zoom lens. Your thoughts.

Copyright protection!!!! How many posters, cups, shirts, etc of the venue will you buy if everyone takes pictures? When in doubt call!!! If they are small, new and trying gain traction, they may allow it especially if you offer them some photos.

When I was sitting on the lawn at Wolftrap last year, listening to Taj Mahal, I had a huge smile on my face because I realized how much joy live music brings me and how much I missed it over the pandemic. As someone that sees a lot of live music my experience now is that while artists and promoters don’t allow “pro” photographers, (other than those they hire), to photograph or video shows, many actually encourage cellphone photos and videos and ask those recording to tag any posts with their hashtags. It makes sense because they know trying to stop it is a losing battle so they basically use it as social media marketing.

What's probably worse is people recording parts of the show and then posting the video online.

I'm a long time fan of the Grateful Dead (A measly 17 shows). They could'nt care less if their concerts were recorded. Their recordings even became renowned. No two shows were the same.

Better yet, they encouraged recording, with areas of the venue set aside for the purpose. They understood the power of “social media” long before the internet.
