I carry dental floss to tie back branches et.al. that may interfere with my composition, black tape, safety pins, and other handy items.

I carry a Model 1911 .45 ACP! Don't know if that would be considered unusual??

I don't consider it a surprise! Just common sense! Others might see things differently.
It does make my bag a bit heavy. Just had to stop carrying a rarely used lens. The .45 is more important!

When I go on Nikon holiday, I spread my cash around and some of it is buried in my camera back pack.

I carry a roll of black electrical tape. Comes in handy when you need to secure something that is unsecure.

One of my cousins used to live in Alaska and went to many remote areas.
She carried a .45. She'd be a fool not to.
Bears......
(Anything smaller would only make them mad.)

When I lived in Alaska I carried a .357 Magnum with Bear loads. I'm glad I didn't have to use it, but it would be foolish not to have carried it. Same in the lower 48, just that the bad guys are smaller and easier to deal with!

A multitool (screwdriver, can opener, scissors, knife, etc.), granola bars, a drink, light rope, a towel, wet wipes, toilet paper and have bear spray hanging from the outside. Ready for the great outdoors!

I agree with Retired CPO. In my case a Glock 26 9mm. Light, compact, high capacity. I worked in a major gang area. They only operate in multiples, so ample capacity was essential.
