I cut the cable 2 years ago (except for $50/month for internet). I have Amazon Prime (with firesticks), Roku, and Netflix (I'd drop netflix in a heartbeat - except that would be my last heartbeat - wife would kill me). We get FREE local TV using a digital antenna pointed at our local TV Antenna farm - about 50 miles away. The signal comes into the house over one of the 2 RG6 cables (the other is the internet cable) I had installed when we built the house - previously used for a DirecTV ($$$) satellite connection - Gone! The digital antenna feeds a 1:8 amplified distribution box (so no loss of signal strength) to all the TV locations in the house - including a Tivo Bolt PVR (I got one that has lifetime TV Guide & recording and programmed it for our local area) and an 82" Sharp Aquos TV (both also have Cat-5 internet connections). Our Land-line phone (and FAX) are via an OOMA VOIP Telo box I bought back in 2010 - works perfect - feeds all the phones in the house for about $5 per month (ALL Unka SxIT taxes!! x=H) - sure - wife and I both have iFoans with a cellular contract - but that's an aside.
The TIVO records our local 5:00 as well as NBC network 5:50 news every day (keeping ONLY the most recent), as well as several other programs (CSI Miami x10, CSI NY x5, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, etc). Game Changer !!
So I watch the nightly news whenever with dinner

Great setup, but watching the news over dinner -- doesn't that often spoil the meal?

I’m mystified why we should pay for a streaming service - they are making $millions on ads already. I believe there are more ad minutes per hour on streaming services than there ever was on over the air broadcasting.

I need suggestions on cutting our $305 monthly bill from Spectrum. (It just jumped $18 monthly in one increase and is getting absurd) We would like to use Spectrum only for internet and then get TV streaming through another service provider, but totally confused with talk about Roku, Tivo, Fire sticks, Sling etc. If we use Spectrum internet, can someone identify a simple solution to use with our Samsung Smart TV without using an antenna? Wife insists on at least having Newsmax, HGTV, Hallmark channels and Fox News. We do not use premium movie channels. Will it be as simple as getting Spectrum internet and a streaming service like SLING? Is HULU a viable service? Thanks for any help you can give.

See if your tv has the YouTube tv app on it. Try it free. You'll pay~$70 a month. Has all you want plus plus. If it doesn't, then you may be able to download the app to your TV. Otherwise get the Roku or Firestick.
Have fun with your money instead of throwing it away. I cut the Comcast cable, got a fiberoptic cable installed for $ 77 a month, and never looked back.

You pay for anything because you want it and you can't get it for free regardless if it costs the provider anything.

StanMac may or may not be correct. Not sure where the millions for ads go.... to the program creators or perhaps a portion to the streaming source.

But the service provider can get more revenue from the advertisers if they can provide more viewers to see the advertisers ads. Providing their service for free would certainly increase viewers, thus giving the service provider the ability to charge higher rates to advertisers. The problem is that we consumers are so addicted to TV that we'll apparently pay anything demanded for a bit of entertainment.

Get Roku. You only pay once for the device. Then add YouTube TV for $72.00 a minth.

Supply and demand. If there are people willing to pay for something, then there are people will try to sell them.

I cut the cable years ago. I am a snowbird and life in Fort Lauderdale and Long Island NY about 50/50, but also have an apartment in nyc, that we only recently rented. I only use a local company like spectrum (they were the worst), Hotwire, Comcast or FiOS to get internet. I love fiber optic because of the up and down speeds. Then we subscribe to Fubo, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Apple TV, Peacock, Max, and a Few others. That way cost less than the about $700 a month I used to spend for 3 homes with cable because you pay for one service but get three locations for the same price. To stream we use Roku and Apple TV devices. If you want to watch something and you don’t know where it is or you want to watch something that has a streaming price Roku search will show you what platform is streaming on and where it’s cheapest. I really like Roku. Another advantage is when you travel on a vacation you can normally stream any of services use subscribe to on other TVs that are not yours by signing in.

Thanks to everyone who has given information regarding their experiences cutting the cord on cable TV. Special thanks to Linda From Maine who gave me special help through private messages. Looks like ROKU and YOUTUBETV are the winners with most recommendations. Will look more closely at SLING also. Thanks again.
