Thought I would get a jump on the rash of bluebonnet photos that will be showing up soon. Texas long ago chose the bluebonnet for the state flower. It does come in several colors but will always be called the bluebonnet whether it is blue, purplish, white, pink, or the new Aggie maroon. At first look the Indian Paintbrush look a little like red bluebonnets but on closer observation, not quite.
Nice patch near a log/limestone house in Fredericksberg, TX

Mixed in with a few cacti on the Willow City Loop in the Texas Hill Country.

My most common finding, bluebonnets near broken down barbed wire fences. Bluebonnet Trail near Crisp, TX

They look like lupine to me. Are lupine and bluebonnets the same flower? Or just cousins?
What a really beautiful set

I think that they are just cousins. If I remember correctly lupine are much taller reaching maybe two feet tall. Bluebonnets rarely get more than about 8 inches or so.
