Yea, I can think of at least two of those four right off.....
It is sad, isn't it.

The whole 4 should be right at the front of your mind. I can't name them here because I see the attic door starting to make wheezing noises.

Oh, I agree! And I live here.
But it's the people IN government, not the actual form of government....
It worked well for years, until people went bonkers.
So, how many countries are laughing at us.

Not uncommon in business, you just dont hear about it. Most businesses make an allowance for bad debts when setting the price of their product. Maybe the Gas and Electric Company havent been doing that but are now forced to do so by the shareholders.

Loan rates are no different. The lenders pass on their losses from non-payments and defaults on to their paying customers. Oh, things will get far worse before they ever get better (or less bad).

At the lake we are members of an electrical co-op. No profits, governed by members who are elected from different districts within the service area. There is no profit so we share in the expense of non payers. They get their power shut off, although not in the cold months. In town our power system is investor owned but highly regulated by the Public Utilities Commission. The do make a profit for the shareholder after expenses. The people that don’t pay get shut off for non payment but not during cold weather. They do solicit for help to pay for the disadvantaged on a voluntary basis. All US utilities are highly regulated.

Here in America, that is status-quo. We pay a lot of taxes so people who can't afford to live, have the opportunity to do so. I have no problem helping those who deserve a hand-up but despise those who game the system and get government handouts when they do not deserve them.

Well, then, the people in England should all stop paying their electric bill.

There is some truth in that I guess. BUT your system stands to lose all credibility between now and November around the world for the next 20 years (my opinion only, time will tell) whereas mine won't. All caused by a truly weird voting system that has all the bits in place to allow your country to descend into a dictatorship or to allow single individuals to dictate their own individual ideas and allow them to go against the majority. Your constitution needs a few tweaks to prevent this from happening again. A system designed 237 years ago can not be expected to still be current in modern times. Dammit I hear attic doors creaking again.

Here in the northeast (NYC) it's perfectly legal to shut someones gas off in the winter for non payment. It's up to to the customer to prove a disability or health issue to have service restored. Cold weather is not a reason to keep their gas on. I know this because I was an Inspector who shut gas off for non payment. COVID screwed all of this up and utilities around the country took a big loss which was passed on through rate hikes.

I live in a small condo community with only 15 units total in 2 buildings. We been beat a couple of times. As I type this there are 2 unit owners behind 7-8 months not including the $4k assessment due July 1, this year. If there was 50-100 units it wouldn't be that hard of a hit for each owner. Same with the US gov with the recent student debt forgiveness during an election year all while claiming a great economy. Not so great they can't find work &n pay back the debt they agreed to. Not fair to the tax payers & should be voted on by the tax payers in my humble opinion. Just say'n!

The same thing happens over here with insurance. A hurricane in the South or a California mudslide occurs, my insurance rates in Indiana go up.
