Great series of action surf photos. The California water is cold by most peoples standards. Upper 50's -low 60's, in the winter time. In the summer it may get up to 68-70F on the warmest days. I spend many years surfing on the California coast. You do need a wetsuit, booties and gloves in the winter months.

Never went surfing in La Jolla, but I did my open water dives to qualify for my scuba divers card there.
Cold and lots of sea weed! We had to dive through the sea weed forest to qualify. Darn near got lost!!
