Clicking on a photo here in UHH replaces the yellow background with black, usually making the photo appear much better-looking.

I think it helps to remove distractions of all the metadata that usually surrounds an image displayed on your computer monitor, making it easier to concentrate on the image itself. (Although it does include a message telling you to click on the image again to go back -- although it is not really necessary to click on the image: anywhere on the page will send you back).

It can also tighten up the pictures a little.

I use the “trick” all the time. Discovered it by accident a few years ago. I remember thinking to myself, “NOW, what did I just do??” Somehow, in spite of myself, I got back.
