I got mail from Sky Auto Protection today. They want me to buy maintenance coverage for my car. Aside from the fact that extended warranties are basically all scams, I had no interest in buying one. I was curious, so I Gopogled tyhe company. Lots of complaints. In their response to one complaint, this is part of their reply.

Sky Protection is a marketer (seller) of service contracts for third-party companies. The service contact is a two-party agreement between you and the company obligated to perform under the service contract.

What this company does is find customers for warranty companies to sign up. If you have a problem with warranty service, do not contact Sky.

Perhaps true, but when I bought an extended warranty on my 2004 Honda CRV, it saved me the cost of an air conditioner twice. The one they paid for failed and had its own warranty.

I periodically receive mail from such companies. This week, I was informed that the warranty on my Honda (which was twenty years old when I sold it ten years ago) had expired. If you want to buy a vehicle protection plan, I am sure you can find one on your own.

In the past I would not purchase an extended warranty when I got a new vehicle and several went past 350,000 miles without any problems. I traded for my diesel in July of 2021 after relatives convinced me there wouldn’t be a better time. The dealership talked me into buying a warranty and I have been so glad they did. So far they have replaced a $2000 radiator, a fuel injector, and a valve in the cooling system. The labor for the radiator and the valve was a full day each. Being retired and on SS paying for any of these would have put me in a real bind. The engine itself has been great. Plenty of power pulling our trailer and great mileage just cruising down the road. But I’m so glad I got that extended warranty.

I’m curious. Several new cars I have bought in recent years had at least 36 month/36k miles bumper to bumper warranties included, so would have thought such things would have been covered.

I had an extended warranty on my refrigerator. A part failed causing the condenser to frost up. Once that happened, air could no longer pass across the fins so the freezer not longer worked and the freezer content started to defrost. I grabbed my wife's hairdryer and thawed the ice from the condenser. This allowed air to flow across the fins and temporarily allowed the freezer to work as it should. Knowing that his wa sonly a temporary solution, I called the extended warrant insuring company to get service. I explained the situation to the representative. She asked, "So, at this moment, the freezer is keeping your food frozen?" I said, "Yes." She responded, "So, why are you calling if it's fixed?" Duh!

Perhaps they sell for Choice Home Warranty as well--a company that accepts your premium and frequently does not pay for repairs. "What the large print giveth, the small print taketh away!"

I came out ahead on this one, especially since the work had to be done twice, and it wasn't just changing out a compressor. The compressor that failed sent crud through the whole system, and it had to be cleaned out thoroughly.

The reality is that insurance companies wouldn't be in business if they didn't make a profit. That includes homeowners insurance, life insurance, long term care insurance, health insurance and so on. The problem I have with these auto protection insurance people is deceptive advertising. They put on a few people (perhaps actors) who might have benefitted with the implication that they're just handing out money to everyone who signs up for any reason.

I got a home warranty with the purchase of my present home and renewed it once until I found out that when something fails, like an air conditioner, they prorate the pay out based on how old the unit is. They depreciate the value just like a car depreciates in value over time. (May not be true in all cases, but this is what I was told.) Forget it.
