That Leofoto is a beast... I broke down and put the LH-55 on my Fotopro last year on the recommendation of one of the really respected forum members here on the Hog. I have NEVER looked back. Leofoto and Fotopro make marvelous products.

Hello all, I’ve been a photographer for 60 years. I have never owned a tripod. I always lived in the city and spent most of my time walking the streets. Recent health issues require I walk with a cane so I’m going to try my hand at landscape photography. I’ve watched a number of tripod shootouts on YouTube and I like the Sirui ST124 ST-Series Carbon Fiber Tripod with K-10X Arca-Type Ball Head. My question for anyone that has owned this is it worth $350? If not what would you suggest under $400? I’m six foot tall and my main camera is a Nikon D750. Thank you for the help. Marty

Buying a tripod is much like buying a pair of shoes. If you don't try them on you may be disappointed.

I can't advise you on the tripod, but if you have never used a tripod you would probably want to investigate the action of the head. I started using a tripod in the '50s and what was available (and affordable) at the time was basically an az/el head. The camera screwed onto the head and a single lever would move it around and/or point it up/down. Photography was pretty much secondary for me until the '90s, at which time I became aware of the existence of the ball head. That allowed you three degrees of freedom in the orientation of the camera. I was never able to get used to it. I prefer the az/el head although az/el/tilt heads are now readily available.

The ball head makes it easy to align the camera to a non-horizontal position (tilted horizon). The az/el/tilt head (two separate levers, one for az/el and one for tilt) makes it easy to keep the horizon level but still tilt the camera up and down. The horizon can be tilted if desired, but won't be tilted accidentally.

Since you're new to tripod use you may be OK with either one, but I would urge you to try them all out before deciding. The tripod and the head are two separate things, so you can mix the head you like with the tripod you like.

I agree with your assessment of the ball head vs. az/elv head. I much prefer the az/elv or az/elv/tilt action.

The ball head I have allows horizontal panning (360 deg.) with the camera locked at any angle from 0 deg. (vertical) to 90+ deg. (horizontal). The horizontal motion even has degree-markings so theoretically an area could be computed to have overlapping coverage for stitching together for a mosaic.

I think there are applications to calculate coverage numbers of exposures for a given area (vert./horiz.) based on lens focal length, however I have never used them.

If you can set a tripod to within +- 15 deg. (I use a surveyor’s tripod), there are some adjustable ‘ball-ish’ head units with panning capabilities.

SUNWAYFOTO LB-68R 360 Panoramic Leveling Base Tripod Head 22 lbs (10kg) Load Capacity is one, with a 68 mm top plate. approx. $69.oo on Amazon. They also make 75mm and 90mm top plates.

With health issues I would say get a Mono-Pod with feet. Lighter smaller less intrusive and doubles as a cane and forget the ballhead, you won't need it. But that's me. Cheers.

What kind of head did you decide on? Just curious.

If you are walking with a cane, I would suggest getting a monopod instead of a tripod. You could probably substitute the monopod for your cane and not have to haul around an extra piece of equipment.

I don't use a cane, but I have used a monopod for many years and on long hikes I've found it to be very helpful.

........I have been helping shoot a documentary this year. It includes using some heavier duty Manfrottos that have flip locks on the legs. I've grown to dislike them, but don't know if twist locks would be better............

Twist locks are a pain in the arse. They take longer than the flip lock to setup. And you have to make sure that EACH lock is done up tight. And take longer to adjust. And you need two hands. Just a personal observation.

I have a different Sirui tripod so cannot make any first-hand comments on the model you have in mind. Another option (which I also have) is the Heipi tripod, worth checking out.

Forgot to add that if Manfrotto at least you can buy spare locks. I have spares for both our heavy duty tripods for when they eventually fail.

Hi Marty,

I use a Sirui s-2205-n tripod with the K-40X Ball Head. I previously shot with a Nikon D750 and now the D850 which uses a RRS (Really Right Stuff) L bracket attachment for the D850. The Sirui tripods are excellent. My ball head is a bit heavy so I would not use this set up for travel when I must fly, but for any other use, this setup is great for whatever shots I want to do. Tripod is quality work. My take is decide what kind of tripod you want to work with as they can either have lockdown brackets or the Sirui type which you must screw/unscrew the legs for setting them up. Their ball head is excellent stuff and smooth rolling into lock position.
