I prefer my zooms because I do primarily cropped panoramas. I usually take several shots to make sure I get everything I want in the resulting panorama. I am often working in tight spots so I can't move around a bit to get the right shot with a prime. For hiking I carry a D7200 with a wide angle zoom which is lighter and more versatile.

Cropped panorama? an interesting concept! Over this last twelve months I've changed my whole kit more than once after many years of Panasonic MFT. Latest (and best) acquisition for my landscapes is a Sony RX10 mk2 with a fixed F2.8 Zeiss 8x zoom (8.8-73.3) - very sharp! (There are mk3 and mk4 updates, but they have 20x superzooms - best avoided for my brand of photography)! Sony Fantastic - Great for hiking.

I'd say "extreme" cropping. Other than custom, try finding a frame for that.

Yep, custom frame, mats, and glass. I buy in bulk and do all my own framing to keep the final price down.

LOL! custom frame. Big deal. 1/2 the stuff I frame is custom.

Food for thought - I usually trim and print to fit frames from China - I recently bought three x A4 complete with backing and plasti-glass from a local store for GB£4. If I require a border I incorporate it in the print.

I use prime lenses for wide angle. Otherwise, I use zoom lenses. One zoom can take the place of many primes.
