The axiom came about because people want all the credit for good photos to them and not the equipment. But most of the time those are the ones that invest heavily in equipment. Those who don't have expensive equipment generally do not say so.

Especially in personal work, theres features in my midpriced gear that can easily and reliably get me pix that were chancey to impossible before those features became commonplace.
FWIW my personal top "enabling" features are IS, EVF and focus magnifier, preburst and HS burst, auto iris, and silent mode.
