I am still waiting for the rumored D400!

I currently am using a z8 and z6ii but am hanging on to the D500. I would like to go all in for mirrorless but Nikon so far hasn't built a replacement for the D500. I like using the 500 with a longer lens since it turns the 200-500 into a 300-750. The z crop sensor cameras are not a replacement in my opinion but more of an entry-level camera. Does anyone think a more professional/enthusiast crop sensor body is likely?
I share this sentiment. I am fully invested in Nikon mirrorless FF (Z8; Z9) and only reluctantly sold my D500. But I also have a Z50, which was my first Z, and that thing is just so much fun to shoot and so easy to carry. If we don’t get a full D500 pro camera, at least let’s get an update on this wonderful camera.

Hard to say. Z8 doesn't shoot in crop mode? Rumors of a Z6III that might satisfy your needs shot in crop mode. I doubt a crop replacement like Canon did with the R7. Reach out to Nikon & ask.

No, Nikon has not produced a APS-C in a Z body. I left my D500 a while back to go mirrorless full frame. I shoot with a 50mp full frame body that can, with a push of a button, go to APS-C mode and it gives me about 23mp, just about the same as I used to get with my D500.
The Z8 and Z9 will get you just about 19.22 MP in APS-C mode. Because of this, I do not believe Nikon will produce a APS-C camera because you already have one built into both the Z8 and Z9.
And with the D500 you can shoot a top end FPS of 10.
With the Z8 you can shoot 20 FPS RAW and 30 FPS Jpeg.
So, again, why produce a APS-C body, there is no need.
You say you own the Z8, then you already have the replacement for the D500.
So, I am sure you have the adapter for you 200-500 to fit the D500, in APS-C mode on the Z8 you already have a lens that can produce a field of view of 300-750. GO USE IT!

Same here but I am not holding my breath anymore...my fingernails were starting to turn blue. It seems that a Z500 or whatever it may be called is not on the immediate horizon, as Nikon concentrated on the FF market. There is speculation on a Z50ii but not sure if it will have specs similar to or surpassing that of the great D500. As some will point out sure you can place a Z8 into crop mode for about 19 mp but it's not quite the same as a full sensor readout of a native DX camera. I think eventually late in 2024 or 2025 they MAY release a native crop version of the Z8 perhaps - perhaps also it may have a global shutter, BSI/stacked sensor, IBIS, and maybe 26-33 MP. The specs and performance of a Z500 camera should exceed that of the D500, to keep up with the trends. Price point around when the D500 was introduced would be sweet too.

I don't know if Nikon would do it. It has to have at least 24MP, at least same AF and frame rate as the Z8 and priced below $2000.
Yes, now that Nikon FINALLY has a light/affordable 400mm f4.5 prime, we all need a crop frame body to go with it for wildlife/birds ! Sony does not have the 400 prime or a crop frame body ! Sony has put all their eggs in the full frame basket and everyone else has followed ....
Canon has a decent R crop frame but no affordable 400 f4-ish R prime to go with it - AND - no plans of making one !
IMO, 400 f4-ish on crop frame is the optimum STARTING point for quality wildlife/birds with the ability to get to 800-ish with extension .....

So why not buy a second Z8 and set it in DX mode, leave the other in FX mode?
Overkill and not in my budget to own two z8s. I think a crop-sensor z would be about half the price of the z8. Someone posted a link about the development of a z90 and that is more in line with what I was looking for. If it does have a 33 mpx. sensor as is speculated, that would be much better than the 20 mpx. the z8 would produce in crop format.

The first two reasons that come to my mind are $3800 (on sale) and 32.1oz (about the same weight as a D850).

I have a similar situation, except my "mirrored" camera is a D750. I'm considering selling it, but I like it too much. I'm also considering selling the D6 II because I have the Z8.
I have no idea what Nikon might do about a mirrorless similar to the D500.

The Z50 is as good as the D500 or you can put your Z8 in DX mode and achieve the same effect.
Having a full frame 45.6mp Z8, you would be better served by shooting it on full frame, instead of crop mode. That way you get a larger overall image and you also have the flexibility to crop the image many different ways.
That is a real advantage.
And yes, a simple one button push can toggle the camera between aps-c and full frame mode.
Assuming the menus options are the same, with my Z9.

Did you mean to say Nikon will not produce a new APS-C Z body? Surely you're aware of the Z50 and ZFC
