It's going to happen, the amount of R&D being spent and the progress made to date underscore the certainty. I bought a Samsung Note 20 Ultra with multiple cameras including one with 108 megapixels. At some point they are going to overcome the depth of view disadvantage. They're not simply phones anymore and not cheap at $1,300, but they are always with you.

My new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has up to 200MP. It must be simulated pixel shift in some crazy fashion. Due to the DoF never being more than f 2.4 I see little difference between the native 12MP and 200MP.

None of that will overcome the issue of optics. They’ll continue to cram more into small sensors and do more with computational photography and AI, but physics will always play a part.
As for paying $1300, maybe a lot for a P&S camera, a lot for a phone, but I occasionally use the camera, the phone even less. What I’m paying for is a computer that keeps me connected to the internet. I text more than call. I browse the internet, do my banking, shop, email, etc. I went to a show the other night, bought the tickets with my phone, saved the digital tickets to my digital wallet, found reserved parking near the theater and prepaid all on my phone. The night before I went to dinner and paid for street parking with it. I booked a vacation rental for me and 7 friends and paid for it and all but two paid me from their phones. The other two mailed me paper checks which I’m getting ready to deposit in my account while I’m sitting here at home. I have a really nice desktop computer and essentially all I use it for is editing and printing photos. The phone does everything else. And occasionally I use Lightroom on my phone to edit photos.

Well, We will be going into page 4 shortly... As I said, I am just a messenger of dubious news. Take a bite, chew it a bit, and swallow or spit ! What I think we can ALL agree on is that we have seen nothing yet in the evolution of the Smartphone... The MASSES are speaking with their money, No matter what the niche market says...

As someone with one foot firmly in each camp, I think that's a good thing. Camera manufacturers will have to work to keep up!

I have been advocating for a Camera with a Phone in it for a while!
It only makes sense. Pancake Lenses would help with fit.

Yep, I am looking down right now at my iMac and marveling how basically besides the display, the whole enchilada is that narrow strip across the bottom... Micro miniaturization and AI etc... are going to astound us in the not too far future. Why not specific task related modules you just snap into body frames etc.. Who knows, exciting times for this stuff...
