Dell XPS 13 2-in-1... to escape from iPad/iOS

Does anyone have any experience with a "Dell XPS 13 2-in-1"... and do you have any thoughts on it as an escape from iPads... or a suggestion for another laptop with the following specs...

I can get this PC, with WiFi/5G/Bluetooth, Intel i7 processor, 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM... and Folio/Keyboard for $1,699... and weighs 1.6lbs.

The latest iPad Pro 12.9 with WiFi, 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM is $1,999... and weighs 1.5lbs... WITHOUT a Keyboard and I am sure that is another several hundred $... and a couple of ounces... all to keep me in the dreaded iOS environment.

Weight and no 5G has kept me from many otherwise great laptops... the negatives with my current, otherwise a wonderful laptop.

I have used and hated iPads since they came out... well it is really the iOS that I despise along with Apple's answers to inquiries. They begin to sound like the "HAL 9000" from "2001:A..." with "You can't do that" or the i-device will not do that... or pay Apple for storage and go thru all the steps (and disadvantages of) putting everything in the cloud.

I am NEVER going to be happy unless I have file access to every file in the device and drag and drop capability with those files... to other directories/devices (which I have hoped for years that Apple would put in iOS).

I want a light/portable device with both WiFi and 5G and this Dell PC seems to fit the bill. I have also considered some of the Micro$oft "Surface" devices; however, their cost and having to sacrifice having a known Intel processor... kills that deal.

I just read a comparison of "Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 vs iPad Pro 12.9...". They lean toward the iPad; however, their reasons are about things that either don't matter to me or I can't perceive the difference in actual use (my wife has the iPad Pro 12.9 and I have a Dell laptop with a comparable screen).

Just in case... I will state that I am posting this in the "General Chit-Chat" section... as appropriate.

I have always like XPS devices, and for me the 13" size is (nearly) perfect.

Thanks for your feedback.

I too have been impressed with XPS. I have an XPS 17 that is portable but not comfortable to use in my lap…. Just too big, heavy, hot. I am hoping that this 13” can be used like an iPad, to hold or place on a small/folding lap-desk like my wife uses her iPad Pro 12.9”.

I bought a refurbished XPS 15 from Dell about a month ago, 32mb mem, 1 tb ssd, i7, non touch display, 4060 GPU for about $1400. I also considered the XPS 13, but if you are doing photo processing, 15 or 17 (bigger but heavier and not travel friendly IMHO). I also have an Inspiron 13” 2in1 that has integrated Intel graphics. It’s a 16mb with 500gb ssd and i7. It chokes on graphics intensive photo processing software. If you, I would consider it only for casual use like email and surfing. The tablet capability is mostly nice but can be a little annoying, especially when rotating the screen to expectedly see a portrait perspective.

Thanks for the feedback. Email and surfing is mainly what this would be used for... it would replace an aging iPad now used for that purpose

Thanks for the feedback.

I had 1 aggravating experience with Dell but the purchased hardware has met my needs personally and professionally (I led a remote division for a small business for several years and purchased Dell many times in that capacity)... and the last couple of times I was looking for something they seemed to have the hardware that is most suitable.

Your choice of iPad or not is simply your choice. Buy it or not, use it or not. Ranting just makes you and the rest of us unhappy. We all have preferences and live with our choices. Be happy and good luck with your future choices.🙂

Thank you for sharing... I guess.

I may have given you the impression I was ranting, but that was not my intention.

1st I sought any feedback I could receive re. the XPS13 that I may buy
2nd part of the use for it was explained by it replacing an iPad
3rd I wanted my position on NOT buying another iPad clear in order to get a lot of feedback (there are some dedicated Apple folks here and while most of them are very nice with their Apple support... it would just give me more text to weed thru that didn't help me) about how good they are and which model iPad I needed... goes back to the above 1st... seeking comments re. XPS13 for my possible decision to purchase.

Thanks for wishing me good luck with my choice

I have very little experience with Apple products. The most I had was with the Iphone (4 to 12) and I didn't like it as compared to Android. I got my first Android phone and I am happy with it. I never used a real Mac. My experience with the Mac was with the original 128K Mac, The Mac SE etc.. and none was a good experience. So with my limited experience I would say you decision to move to Windows is a good one. I have the Microsoft Surface Pro and I like it a lot.
As with Dell, I have used 3 Dell laptops (all provided by the company I worked for) and I did have a lot of problem with them. They tend to go to bluescreen once in a while. One is very slow because the CPU won't go into high speed regardless on how I try to set it. One I had to replace the battery twice in a year because they are swelling. So my experience with Dell as far as Windows machines were not as good as HP, IBM or Lenovo.
However, many had good experience with Dell.

I think both the Microsoft Surface and the Ipad (as well as other Apple products) are made by Foxconn.

Probably are (made by Foxconn)… everything is. It is the iOS operating system I am trying to get away from. There are things that are easy and intuitive with Windows, LINUX, UNIX… you name it… that are not possible with iOS… and Apple answers questions about it with iOS was never designed to do that (mainly file management type of things)

I can't say with any authority but I feel what you can't do with IOS isn't because Apple doesn't know how but rather they just don't want you to do it that way.

I recently purchased an ASUS Expertbook from Amazon, couple of months ago. 13.3 OLED screen, i7, 16gb ram, 512 SSD $699. I'm so far completely satisfied, especially the screen, bright and clear. I use it at work and generally get a day out of the battery. Runs Photoshop OK also SolidWorks CAD. For my needs it great and ASUS is getting a better reputation all the time.
