I found a lens I've wanted on MPB, at a good price. Seeing lots of positive reviews (including here on UHH) I decided to make the purchase.

I called MPB, asking to place an order over the phone. Told I can't do it, must use web. Ok.

So I placed my order on the web, then got phone call for "security clearance." Fine, I can understand that: it was a big ticket item, and nobody wants to be scammed.

After a few legitimate questions (credit card, shipping address, etc.) they asked if I was an amateur or a professional. Seemed odd, but I played along. Next, what would I be using the lens for? Did I have other Nikon equipment? Had I ever used any other camera brands? I answered, but said I found the questions intrusive, probably more for marketing than for security.

The order went through, but then 3 days later I got an email saying the order was cancelled because it had "not passed our security checks process." I called, and was told that while my credit card had been approved for the purchase, they wouldn't accept my order. I asked to speak to a manager, and was told none were available. They'd get back to me. 3 hours later, no call.

So I've bought the lens from KEH -- slightly more expensive, but no hassles, and much better return policy.

Yet another dirty laundry post. Please stop. If you have a complaint, take it some where else. PLEASE.

I can tell you already what you did wrong...you probably know already as well.

Anyone...try and find their phone number on the website...very difficult to do...not even in contact info.

They don't want to do business over the phones...few business' do these days...mainly service companies only.

So you red flagged yourself just by calling a number they don't advertise generally.

If you had simply placed the order online...like the rest of the planet...you would have that lens.

My experience with MPB has been good and always strictly website and email interactions. This was a very strange interaction. It almost sounds like an over zealous security person operated outside of established procedure.

That’s too bad. Most of my purchases over the years have been from MPB with no issues. Cameras and lenses, not big ticket expensive.

Human interaction to resolve problems that don't lend themselves to written communications is a trend across companies that use the internet to sell goods and services. Perhaps one of the best examples of this for UHH is post processing software. I switched from Adobe to ON1 about 5 years ago. ON1 is generally responsive to online service requests, but I have found it impossible to talk with a human being or have a remote session for complex issues. I have even suggested to them that they charge sufficiently so customer service doesn't become a loss leader, and may even be profitable. Speaking for myself, I would rather part with some money than spend hours tearing my hair out over software snafus. If any of you have post processing software that has telephone and remote-session support available, please let me know!

Me too..no more MPB.
I live in NY City.
Went to MPB a few years ago, showed them a lens I wanted to sell.
They examined it, and then told me they would sent me an email quote
That seemed strange, why not give the quote to me there.
Got the quote...it was ok.
Brought the lens back to them with a copy of the email.
They then said they gave me too high a quote and wanted to lower it by $10.
I walked out of the place!!

They only recently started trading in the states, as far as I am aware they are online only, no "walk in option".

I find Used Photo Pro (Robert's Photo, Indianapolis) one of the best places to deal with used equipment. Give them a try!

I just used Roberts UPP to help a friend whose husband had passed away sell some of his old film gear. She not only got a fair price, but a very fast response and the same day she accepted the offer they had a check in the mail. I'm much more impressed with their faster results than I have been with anywhere else (and yes, I've dealt with KEH, MPB, and Adorama).

I've bought and sold there several times. Very quick and direct.

I agree. Worse than that, I find it a little bewildering or embellishing or ….

Bought and sold with them without any problems. I check there first when I'm looking for used in great condition.

Very strange… I purchased a used in excellent condition Zeiss ZF2 35mm f/2 T* Distagon lens from MPB in 2020 and was very pleased with the purchase. Because I had never done business with them, I called their USA customer support number and spoke with a very helpful man from Brooklyn. The lens arrived within a few days and was in perfect condition in its original box. It even included a metal Zeiss lens hood, which wasn’t mentioned in the online listing. Based on this original posting, something must have changed at MPB over the past three years.
