Here's something to think about...A woman uses the public restroom and places her purse on the floor. When she comes home, she places her purse on the kitchen counter. The rest is history.

The five second rule is null and void if you have a two second dog!

I'll be 87 early next month and I've frequently eaten food that has dropped on floors, carpets, counters, chairs and my lap. No issues or diseases yet. Maybe I'm just very lucky?

Me too. What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger?
Babies crawl around the floor, sit and often lick their fingers, yum. Most grow up to be healthy adults.
I did and I'm a healthy 76 yo. Apart from having got over prostate cancer and now waiting for 2 new hips.

Due to inflation it's now 7.45 seconds.

We all know that if food falls onto the floor, if you pick it up within five seconds, it's okay to eat it. The graphic below demonstrates that.

I have quoted the 5 second rule (or 10 seconds, or 3 seconds, whatever); however, the determining factors are always: (1) how tasty is it... to me and (2) is there more available. If it is very tasty and no more available I am probably going to eat it. Is there a vaccination available for that?

Good point, but in our house she will NOT place that purse on a kitchen counter... put it in the floor... it helps flavor the food that fell there

The one thing that is generally ignored in talking about the five second rule is that there is bacteria on all the food we eat. But just like our prehistoric ancestors and beasts in the wild, we have millions upon millions of bacteria-destroying bugs of our own in our bodies that kill, digest and discard much of what we ingest. How many people keep their toothbrushes many feet from our bathrooms? Mythbusters also did a show in which they measured the coliform bacteria in our bathroom. Our toothbrushes are more contaminated that that M&M you dropped on the floor.

That is why I replace our toothbrushes every 2 months!

I remember seeing a Mythbusters episode which tested the 5 second rule. Their conclusion was ""Even if something spends a mere millisecond on the floor, it attracts bacteria," MythBuster's five-second rule myth buster continued. "How dirty it gets depends on the food's moisture, surface geometry and floor condition - not time." Worst case is probably dropping moist food on a carpet.

I never worry about dropping food on a carpet. I have a Labrador who doesn’t know how to count. He eats anything. Furthermore I haven’t bought vacuum cleaner bags since July…..1986!

There is a 5 month rule for M&Ms under the car seat.

The obvious clue is the brief experiment where some hospitals had carpeted patient rooms. Infections exploded.

So you’re saying that when using a truck stop bathroom I shouldn’t leave my sandwich on the sink or floor while I’m on the pot? How about if I stop eating and place it on the top of the stool tank? Or should I put it on the toilet paper dispenser until I finish up my business? I get the feeling I’m not in touch with modern hygiene.

It also applies to peanuts and French fries that had tried to escape.

At our movie theater you can buy the $15.00 bucket and you can get free refills.most people including myself buy one and eat the whole thing with the grandkids and the wife.we place the bucket on the movie theater floor .by the middle of the movie we go get more popcorn.the idiot grabs my bucket and puts it on top of the popcorn and refills my bucket. I reported him immediately to his supervisor who had no idea what the hell I was talking about. I asked him to follow me.we walked into the theater and I saw a bucket of empty popcorn on the floor . I asked if they were going to get a refill and they said yes.now the supervisor knew what I was try to tell him.
