Especially an old one. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Then "caveat lector" seems appropriate in this case. I suppose that requiring anyone writing lengthy posts to include an abstract might help. Perhaps not but it couldn't hurt.

Exactly.

Some like the lengthy dissertations for the minute details, some simply need an overview.
So how should one write, other than intelligently.

Longshadow....I remember when newspapers were the greatest source of news. As you recall, they'd start a story on, say, page 1 and then continue it on page 6. The articles would contain the highlights of the story in the first few paragraphs, but then go into further detail after. Newspaper articles gave us the complete story, but were written in such a way that we could stop reading once we got the highlights if we wished to. Internet news stories can't compare. Those old enough know what I'm talking about.

And they still do this. My reaction is " what's wrong with the writer, why are they saying the same thing twice ?". Then stop reading and go away convinced that the article writer must have failed English.

I would have thought the opposite was true.

I don’t know if because of my age but I don’t like to read long posts. I‘m 86. I know people like to give a full overview of what they are saying but it’s better to try to condense your thoughts before posting.

Is it that you think that at 86 you are entitled to be rude? or that this forum is just for what YOU like?

I started to read the comments. Then I realized it was four pages long. The first page was long enough for me.😁

Books and social media posts are a bit different.

(Clarity and intelligence should prevail in both though.)
