Coming to the US (from the UK), I couldn't understand why roundabouts weren't a normal part of driving. A great idea.

When I took my driver's license test in 1954, driving on the "traffic circle" was a requirement. I have never had a problem with them. I live but 4 miles from a very busy one and use it almost daily.

Hi Mark...
Funny...
I got my Drivers License in 1955.
I was 16.
I passed and my dad didn't.

signs before the roundabout tell you which lane to move to. like the signs approaching a spaghetti bowl interchange.

One big problem with the roundabouts I've seen is drivers changing lanes right in front of other cars. This happens to me almost every time I'm in the local roundabout. Drivers are allowed to make a right turn from the left lane. That's bad news for cars in the right lane.

California is trying something new at a notoriously bad roundabout. It's called a Turbo Roundabout, an idea developed in the Netherlands in 1996. There is only one other in the country, in Jacksonville, FL. Before drivers enter the roundabout, they select where they want to go. They drive into that lane and remain there until they exit.

The local roundabout isn't wide enough for tractor trailers, so they must use both lanes. Great design!

I can tell you turbo roundabouts do make a big difference. It requires some adapting but it keeps traffic flowing. Also normal junctions are often crash magnets, not so with turbo roundabouts. In my area there are hardly any junctions, apart from low speed zones...

The problem as I see it is that drivers do not plan ahead for their exit as they drive an therefore make these dangerous moves.

The first time I encountered a roundabout was at camp Lejeune NC, it was a two lane roundabout in front of the base headquarters building and was a pain to get off base at 1600 on a Friday when everyone and there brother wanted to swoop home for the weekend. If you were in the inside lane you could find yourself going around an around before someone would let you move over so you could exit.

Our local traffic circle used to be large enough that that wasn't a problem. There was plenty of room to move into a different lane. Also, if you saw a car entering the circle, you had enough time to enter. With this new, small roundabout, if you see a car enter, you don't have enough room to enter until it passes.
