On the screen you will see 2 lugs at the bottom, one left one right. Use either one to lift the screen bottom upwards, you can then move it away from the camera slightly if required, and rotate for upward viewing.

Additionally, you can just use the lug on the screen top left to fold it downwards.

I believe the Olympus that the OP was talking about can't do what the Z8 can in these pictures that you post. I think it's the reason for the complicated mechanism as well as not true full articulating.

What can't you do with the OM-1? It's actually much more versatile.

Ah ok that explains why Architect took offense to my suggestion. I was surprised that he seemed to be defending Nikon.

You are a liar and hater.
I have never taken offense at some comments you make.
Actually you are the one taking offense over and over.
So quit projecting your anger and umbrage onto others.

Right and functionally how is that any different than swinging out and tilting it down?

You can’t make that statement unless you’re ready to back it up.

Having both an OM-1 and Z9, they’re both great and flexible cameras, but the OM-1 does have a big edge in shooting features.

Mine must be defective, it has very limited options and a ridiculously complex mechanism. Am I missing something here? I was expecting much more. I wish I had the option to buy the Z8 without it. I would rather not have a back screen, save the space and the potential unreliability, than have to put up with the abortion that is there now.

Full disclosure: I have many Nikon cameras and lenses I am a fan of the Nikon cameras and lenses. But Nikon's articulating screen design is just plain stupid.

Olympus has had a TRUE articulating screen for many years. Please see attached images for a proper articulating screen design.

It tilts in two planes only. I agree the mechanism is far too complex and my opinion is that they will start failing soon (I have 2 Z8s). I also expected a single pivot point ala Canon, but no such luck.

Nikon actually developed that design because of concerns about the long term integrity of a fully articulating screen. The Nikon design does work better if you use an L-bracket.

It is a bastard to move. My experience only, yours may vary.

Although I would rarely use the screen as viewfinder so it's not relevant to me. But if I were to use it as waist level viewfinder it's better just to tilt the screen up than swinging it out of the body where the screen is now to the side of the camera. With the Z8 screen you only lose the ability to do selfie.

Who says it has to be either or? I can and do have both.
I don't buy cameras because of their tilt screen design but it’s easy to see when one product has a superior design.

Do you think that any product is so perfect it cannot be improved?

I think all products can probably be improved. Send your suggestions to the Nikon product development team if your intent is to help them develop better products. If you are just bellyaching - keep wailing here - it will have zero effect whatsoever - just polluting the web

I think customer feedback is important for any company and the purpose here is to have a discussion, make people aware of the issue, then those who wish for improvements can make suggestions to Nikon.
