Happy New Year. I hope we all have an interesting 2024
I need a copy of Word and Powerpoint for Mac. On the web, I found a number of places that sell earlier versions of Microsoft Office, for example, for a very low price. "Shop Win & Office" sells the Office Home and Business 2021 for $49.99. Has anyone purchased and used something like this? Are they legit?
What is wrong with having a current fully licensed version with support from Microsoft? You could afford a Mac. The old or used copies might be legit or they might not. I have to go with the full subscription version of Office 365 Profesional because I use MS Access. If you have two Mac or a Mac and PC you might want to be sure to use the same version of Office on both. My wife has an older version of Office (perhaps Office Professional 2010?) on her PC and we go nuts trying to help one another because the two versions are so very different. Good luck and be careful.

I LOVE what can be done in the current version of EXCEL for sort/filter of cell contents.
I just reduced a list of family female names/relationships from a genealogy report from 2,730 entries to 707 entries.
SO EASY!
Older versions
may not support the process.

Check Apple's app store. They have a legitimate Microsoft Word for the Mac. A Microsoft 365 subscription is $69.99.
If you want a legit app that's low cost and compatible with Word, I suggest LibreOffice. You can get LibreOffice from the Apple app store for $8.99, or you can download it for free from the libreOffice site (libreoffice.org).
Using the App store, you'll get easy updates. You'll need to check for and get updates thru the software if you download from LibreOffice.
I quit using Microsoft Office when they started the subscription model. Libre Office meets all of my (office related) needs.
Do you need Word? Can you download a program called 'Libreoffice' for the Mac. This is a Word like suite that offers nearly all the equivalents of Microsoft Office, but is freeware. It's an excellent substitute. I've been using it for a decade.

Does LibreOffice read old and new Microsoft Word documents?

Yes
Even password protected ones?
At one time, it did not. I am honestly interested in knowing if they have found a way to do that.
You may want to do as I have done. I have a Mac, but I have added MS-Windows to it. The people at Apple guided me along the way. I did have to purchase a separate copy of the Windows OS system. I'm able to switch back and forth between both operating systems if I desire, but I mainly us Windows. In the past I had purchased Microsoft Office Professional. The new version that I now have on my computer is not quite at that level. However, Microsoft offered a free version of Office 365 which I did download but have not really used.
I'm not sure what your needs are, but be careful. Not all versions do the same thing. When I had the full version of Excel I was able to do quite a bit more than what I'm able to do with the current version. One example is that the current version that I have will not copy the template of one file that has data into a new blank file.
Friends don't let friends buy an office suite. Libre office now works on Apple.

Microsoft 365 Basic is $20/year.
We had Office 2003 until my wife needed the current version of Word to be compatible with where she worked (Covid work at home....).
She retired two years ago, we just kept <renewing> it.
Thanks for the information.
